MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

I think we have all been shocked and saddened by the tragedy in Christchurch last week. That such a terrible act of terrorism and hate could be directed at innocent people worshipping at their place of prayer is almost incomprehensible. Christchurch is a beautiful city and has already been through so much with the terrible earthquakes a few years ago.

On Harmony Day, it is timely to reflect on the fact that Brisbane is a diverse and inclusive city and a wonderful example of successful multi-culturalism in practise. Hate speech and acts have no place in our community. In Tennyson Ward, we have more than a dozen different faiths, some with multiple places of worship, active within the district. Whilst we don't have a mosque, there are several nearby at Holland Park, Buranda, West End, Moorooka and Inala and I know our thoughts are with all those of the Muslim faith who have been touched by this tragedy.

Many people have been thinking about how they can show their respect and send a message of support and hope. At Tuesday's meeting, Brisbane City Council passed a motion of sympathy to the friends and family of the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack and to the people of New Zealand. Council has also created a condolence book for the City of Christchurch located in the foyer of City Hall that you can sign. Council will also be holding a vigil on Friday 22 March at 5pm outside City Hall in King George Square. All are welcome to attend and show their support for the people of Christchurch.

Regards, Nicole

GRACEVILLE CENOTAPH UPGRADE

This year the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL Sub-branch celebrates its 100th anniversary. To recognise this important event in our community life, Council is working with the RSL to upgrade the cenotaph and restore the brass plaques and damaged sandstone. The project is being funded by contributions from the RSL, Council, and State and Federal Governments. I thank the RSL for leading this important project and ensuring that this historic World War One cenotaph will continue to be a significant place of commemoration in our community for another 100 years. The work will be completed in time for Remembrance Day in November this year.

For ANZAC Day, we recognise the founder of the Sherwood RSL, Lt Maurice Little, who served as the first President of the Sherwood RSL from 1919 to 1925 and was a lifelong champion of veterans. Lt Little, a Gallipoli hero, was badly injured at Quinn's Point, but came home to Corinda to champion the needs of World War One veterans. The pathway between Churchill St and the cenotaph will be officially dedicated as Maurice Little Way on ANZAC Day this year.

I hope you will all join me at the ANZAC Day service and unveiling at Graceville Memorial Park on 25 April - march fall in at 7am and service commences 7.30am.

NEW SHADE SAIL FOR LEYSHON PARK
In the next few weeks Council will install a new shade sail at the playground in Leyshon Park, Fairfield (opposite William Pde) to replace shade provided by the trees lost in the 2014 super-cell storm. This will be a welcome addition on hot days and will provide families with much-needed shelter from the hot Queensland sun. I am still working on additional trees, but as the park is an old tip site, this is proving difficult with Council.

UNFENCED DOG OFF LEASH AREA TRIAL

After a petition was submitted to Council in support of an unfenced dog off leash area (DOLA) in Thomas St Park, Sherwood, Council have approved a trial to take place in coming months.

As part of the trial, a number of bollards will be installed on the eastern and western boundaries of the park, which owners will be required to keep their dogs within. Signage will also be installed to clearly mark the trial area and assist park users.

This will hopefully provide a good, low-cost compromise, as the unfenced DOLA will not impede the natural landscape, while enhancing dog-friendly facilities for Sherwood residents.

It will be important that your dog is on-lead outside this area, as Council will be conducting proactive patrols once the trial starts to ensure residents respect the off-leash boundaries.

STREETS OF REMEMBRANCE

In honour of ANZAC Day 2019, Brisbane City Council is partnering with the Australian Defence Force to recognise Brisbane streets that share their name with people, places and events of historical significance to Australian conflicts.

This year, the types of street names considered are those associated with Australian Soldiers of New Guinea, as well as WWI and WWII Victoria Cross recipients. A full list of all previously commemorated streets can be found on Council's website here or by searching for 'Streets of Remembrance'.

To date, the 'Rising Sun' badge and the 'Royal Australian Navy' badge have been included on 677 street signs, recognising 133 street names in 202 locations around the City.

If you have a suggestion of a street name that would commemorate Australia's men and women in conflict in this special way, please let me know by either emailing my office at tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au or by phone at 3403 8605. I look forward to hearing from you.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT ST VINCENT DE PAUL ANNERLEY

Do you live in Annerley and have time to help people in need in our local community? Can you spare a couple of hours during the week or on a Saturday?

St Vincent De Paul Annerley are looking for volunteers to help deliver food, household goods and financial assistance to people doing it tough in our local community. This includes isolated elderly people, victims of family breakdowns or violence, unemployed people and those with a mental illness. Real people who are struggling with the necessities of life that most of us take for granted.

You do not have to be Catholic and Vinnies operates separately from the Church. Volunteers of all ages, faiths and ethnicities are very welcome. Many of the volunteers have been involved for 30 years and some are in their 80s and going strong.

For more information please call Ian on 0411 179 743 or Janet on 0412 634 314. If you have been thinking about a practical way to volunteer locally and make a real difference in our community, this might be the way for you to get started.

CENTRAL CONTROL WATER MONITOR SYSTEM 2018-19

From last month, Council began installing centralised irrigation monitoring to existing irrigation systems at sports clubs around the City. As part of the programme, 20 sports grounds will receive the system each year, for the next four years.

The clubs chosen for the programme this financial year within the Tennyson Ward are Chelmer Sports Club, Sherwood Football Club Ltd, South Brisbane District Cricket Club Inc, The Australian Hellenic Sports & Cultural Association, Souths Graceville Rugby League Club Inc and El Salvador Soccer Club Qld Inc.

The irrigation system will be digitally linked to weather stations that monitor and report water flow, usage trends and environmental data across Brisbane.

The purpose of the system is to encourage community sports clubs and Council to work together to improve sports field conditions, and for the organisation to take control of its current water usage.

Benefits to community sports clubs fields will be:

  • Provide monitoring of water usage
  • Provide water usage reports
  • Program irrigation system via cloud using a smart phone or tablet
  • The ability to monitor irrigation faults
  • Improvement to watering practices, to save money on water bills
  • Save water if a major water leak occurs
  • Irrigation training for operation and maintenance
  • No cost to organisation

Works have begun and are due for completion by the end of June, 2019.

As part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, 6,600 Brisbane bus stops will undergo upgrades and maintenance works to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats to ensure compliance with disability and accessibility regulations.

The following bus stop will be upgraded in the coming months:

  • #13064: Hyde Rd, near Utzon St, stop 31, Yeronga

To complete these works and to maintain bus stop accessibility, Council will be removing one leopard tree and working in the tree protection zone of one other leopard tree.

There may be some minor local impacts during work hours of between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works may be required. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.

TREE MAINTENANCE AND REPLANTING, FAIRFIELD

A number of newly-planted trees in Rowlinson Park, Fairfield and surrounding streets included in the Fairfield Community Planting Day are suffering heat stress due to the very hot and dry summer period and will require removal and replacement. The removal works have commenced with replacement planting to begin in the week of 15 April, once the drought-like conditions pass.

If you notice a tree on your frontage is struggling due to heat, please let my office know on 3403 8605 and we will ask Council to inspect it.
