MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

For almost two decades Irina has run a therapeutic horse programme for disabled children called Equus Terra at Hyde Rd. Yeronga residents will know the horse paddocks well, the wonderful work she does with disabled children and the amazing results they get at the special Olympics and other similar competitions.

Irina is seeking the community's support and is petitioning Council to acquire the land, which is privately owned, as public open space/parkland which could then be leased back for community use like other sporting fields in the district. This would be a great outcome for our community and help protect against over-development.

I have already written to and spoken directly with the Lord Mayor about buying this land at 143 Hyde Rd which is partially zoned industrial and part sport and recreation. In this year's Council Budget he announced $20m to buy new park and sporting land around the City and I think this fits the bill. The funds have not yet been allocated so now is the time to ask.

You can help Irina continue her work with disabled children by signing the hard copy of the petition in my office at Fairfield Gardens or online on Council's petition website here.

Regards, Nicole.

PARK UPGRADES AHEAD FOR FAIRFIELD

Good news for Fairfield! Two new parks projects have been funded in the 2019-20 Budget.

$108,000 has been allocated for a new playground at Turley St Park, Fairfield. The old playground was removed two years ago for age and safety reasons, so it's great news that Council has allocated funds for a replacement.

Have your say and meet me at the old playground site in Turley St to discuss playground design ideas on Saturday, 3 August from 10am - 11am. If you can't make it you can review the preliminary playground designs on my website here and email me your ideas by Friday, 16 August. I look forward to hearing from you.

$95,000 has also been allocated for pathway lighting in Norm Rose Park, Fairfield, near Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre. This is an important safety project following a very serious assault a few years ago. Quite a few other parks are awaiting pathway lighting in Yeronga and Fairfield.

NEW FOOTPATH FOR EQUITY ST, ANNERLEY

A new concrete footpath has been installed on Equity St, Annerley, between Fanny and Dudley Sts, near Fairfield Station. This is something I have been campaigning for for many, many years and I'm pleased Council has found some emergency funds to undertake this work.

The new footpath looks great and is providing a much safer passage for pedestrians accessing the busy train station.

I am hoping Council will fund the remaining section between Dudley and Clive Sts in a future Budget and will keep pushing. But progress and good news.

LOCAL TRAFFIC UPDATE

SLOW DOWN ON KADUMBA ST, YERONGA

The new 'slow down' sign has been installed on Kadumba St, Yeronga just prior to Kingsley Pde, heading eastbound. The intersection is an accident hotspot and the sign is a reminder to all vehicles to slow down and watch for traffic emerging from side streets.

A slow down sign is also on Kadumba St heading westbound just prior to St Sebastian's.

The SAM signs, which prompt drivers with a green smiley face or red speed are regularly rotated through Yeronga and Fairfield on Kadumba St, Hyde Rd and Brisbane Corso. Thanks drivers for helping to keep our community safe.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

Brisbane City Council's portable speed warning signs (SAMs) on Hyde Rd, Yeronga, Brisbane Corso, Yeronga and Waterton St, Annerley have produced some clear results.

Hyde Rd, Yeronga is posted as 60km/h. The sign also collected data for a five month period from 8 November to 24 March, 2019. During this time, 220,291 vehicles (av. 1,620 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. 10,289 vehicles or 4.7% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 66km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 3kms to 63km/hr within the speed camera range.

Brisbane Corso, Yeronga is posted as 60km/h. The sign collected data for a two month period from 6 February to 30 March, 2019. During this time, 197,192 vehicles (av. 3,792 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. 12,698 vehicles or 6.4% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 67km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 3kms to 64km/hr within the speed camera range.

Waterton St, Annerley is posted as 60km/h. The sign collected data for a two and a half month period from 1 January to 30 March, 2019. During this time, 286,566 vehicles (av. 3,926 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. 12,602 vehicles or 4.4% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 66km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 4kms to 62km/hr within the speed camera range.

While these results show that vehicles are slowing down when prompted, there is still an issue with speeding around our local streets. Please slow down and drive carefully!

The SAM signs are currently located on Kadumba St, Yeronga and Venner Rd, Annerley and are due to be rotated to other nearby locations within the ward this month.

As part of Council's three year project, approximately 8000 lights will be upgraded to more energy efficient LED lighting, which helps reduce energy consumption by up to 60%. 1200 lights at 80 locations around the city have been upgraded so far, with another 1800 lights at 280 locations to be installed as part of round two.

Within the Tennyson Ward, lighting upgrades will be and have been undertaken at the following locations:

  • Brisbane Corso Park, Fairfield
  • Fairfield Park, Fairfield
  • Faulkner Park, Graceville
  • Dunlop Park, Corinda
  • Englefield Rd Park, Oxley
  • Faulkner Park, Graceville
  • Francis Outlook Park, Corinda
  • Graceville Riverside Parklands, Graceville
  • Nosworthy Park, Corinda
  • Yeronga Memorial Park, Yeronga

The majority of the LED lights will be installed during business hours between Monday to Friday. The installation of lights at each location will take from half a day up to a week, depending on the number of lights to be replaced at the site. Pedestrians and cyclists may experience minor detours or delays when travelling through a park or bikeway during the installation of new LED lights. Where necessary, traffic controllers will be on-site to assist pedestrians and cyclists to safely move through the work area.

Queensland Rail Track Maintenance

Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program

Council is undertaking works to improve the accessibility of bus stops across the City. As part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, 6,600 Brisbane bus stops will undergo upgrades and maintenance works to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats to ensure compliance with disability and accessibility regulations.

The following bus stop will be upgraded in the coming months:

  • #13065: Hyde Rd near Utzon St, stop 31, Yeronga
  • #10132: Crichton St near Park Rs, stop 27, Yeerongpilly
  • #3731: Cornwall St at Rusk St, stop 14a, Woolloongabba
  • #4913: Ipswich Rd at Yeronga Park, stop 26, Annerley

There may be some minor local impacts during work hours of between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works may be required. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.

Tree removals

The following locations will undergo tree removals prior to the end of August 2019:

  • 37 Anita St, Yeronga
  • 53 Violet St, Yeronga
  • 62 Violet St, Yeronga
  • 27 Grounds St, Yeronga
  • 40 Kadumba St, Yeronga
  • 14 Wilton Tce, Yeronga

Replacement plantings will be undertaken at a later date. If the residential location is not appropriate, trees will be replanted at a park close by.

King Arthur Tce, Yeerongpilly Reopening

In July, the newly-aligned King Arthur Tce will reopen between Godiva Ave and Mooney St/Queens Way. As part of the State Government's Yeerongpilly Green project, a number of changes have been made in the surrounding precinct near the Tennis Centre.

Vehicles will now be able to travel directly along King Arthur Tce from the Fairfield Rd traffic lights. A new set of traffic lights is also in place at Bevidere St in addition to those at Queens Way. This is very welcome after months of detours for residents.
