MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

Congratulations to Yeronga State School on winning Brisbane City Council's Clean School's Award for their waste management activities. 18 amazing students work around the School to pick up waste and encourage school-wide behaviour change, like banning plastic straws. This year I was really happy to support them with the purchase of litter pickers and other waste recovery tools to help make their job a bit easier. Well done on being the very best School in Brisbane Yeronga State School!

We've been hearing a lot about crime in Yeronga recently and I've organised a self-defence workshop seminar for women and girls at the Yeronga Community Centre. The workshop is open to women of all ages and abilities. I hope to see you there on Saturday, 2 November 2019.  More details below.

Regards Nicole.

Ps... all the details you need for Remembrance Day at Yeronga Memorial Park are noted below.

IPSWICH RD PEDESTRIAN SAFETY UPDATE

For many years now I have been working with Annerley residents to push for pedestrian safety improvements along Ipswich Rd and adjoining streets. Finally, after community meetings, multiple petitions and submissions to Council through their Move Safe initiative last year there is some progress. You can view the Move Safe report here.

One of the two promised reviews has now been completed, the Pedestrian Road Safety Review. The other, the Ipswich Rd Corridor Report, relating to traffic, is still to come.

The Review found that over the past five years there have been 95 recorded crashes, 9 involving pedestrians in the survey area (Ipswich Rd between Annerley Rd and Cracknell Rd).

There are 27 recommendations some of which are frustrating like, "undertaking a speed limit review of the corridor" by December 2019, as that's what we have been calling for, for many years. Other recommendations are more unexpected like "investigating closing side streets" and "changing side streets to left in/left out" and could potentially have major implications for traffic movements in and around the district.

Many recommendations are sensible and practical like improvements to footpaths and kerb ramps, pedestrian lighting, signal phasing (for cars and people movements), new wayfinding signage and tree trimming. A green walk signal at the slip lane at Ekibin Rd is also recommended and would be a valuable safety improvement at this busy crossing point.

At this stage Council has advised me that I am not allowed to release the draft recommendations to you but I am seeking a full copy of the Report.

I will be using the recommendations as an action list and following up with Council to ensure they meet the promised timeframes over the next six to 12 months. I have also requested that before major changes are made that Council undertakes consultation with our community. It is essential that any changes involve community consultation so we can ensure they meet local needs.

The future of Venner Rd is not addressed in this Report but was promised as part of the Ipswich Rd Corridor Study. Action on Venner Rd remains a critical facet of improving safety for Annerley residents given the tragedy last year for a local family.

I look forward to working with residents over coming months to ensure progress on pedestrian and traffic safety in Annerley is improved.

LOCAL PARKS UPDATE

Rowlinson Park, Yeronga Playground Update

Plans are underway for the new playground at Rowlinson Park, Yeronga. This year I have budgeted $100,000 from the Tennyson Ward parks trust funds for the upgrade.

The current playground is a very tired, older style and many local families have spoken with me about the need for an upgrade.

Thank you to all residents who gave great feedback on the concepts. The plans are available on my website here and includes:

  • two new interactive forts with games for toddler and bigger kids;
  • climbing and agility equipment for all ages;
  • swing set, including toddler and basket swings;
  • cockatoo rocker;
  • new shade sail; and
  • sandstone wall/seat.

Plans are being finalised and work is due to begin in the new year.

Turley St Park, Fairfield Playground Update

This year Council has allocated $108,000 for a new playground at Turley St Park, Fairfield. The old playground was removed two years ago for age and safety reasons.

Design plans are being finalised and will available in coming weeks on my website here. Thank you to everyone who provided me with helpful feedback on the concepts.

I am hopeful that construction will begin early next year. I will keep residents updated on the work.

Hefferan Park, Annerley Upgrade Have Your Say!

Thank you to all the residents who provided feedback about the upgrade to Hefferan Park, Annerley.

There are some really creative ideas including edible gardens, more trees and seating, indigenous interpretation, book library, play equipment, lighting, public art and reuse of the heritage listed WW2 air raid bunker. As the park is heritage listed, we will need permission to undertake the works.

Council is currently preparing a draft landscape plan and I look forward to sharing this with residents in coming weeks.

New Park Name for Yeerongpilly

Thank you to everyone who participated in the park naming survey for the new parkland near Tennyson Reach that forms part of the Yeerongpilly Green development. Consolidated Properties recently handed over the new parkland area to Council, which will receive an official name in coming months.

I undertook a two stage process with nearby residents to determine prospective names and then a popular vote on all nominated names. Those names were Ash Barty Park (Australian tennis player); The Talking Oak Park (poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson); and Yerongpan Park (indigenous people of the local area).

In total, we received 48 votes and 20 (42%) of those were for Ash Barty Park. The next most popular was Yerongpan Park with 16 (33%) votes, followed by The Talking Oak Park with 12 (25%) votes.

I have now asked Council to progress the park naming for Ash Barty Park, which requires a vote when Council resumes. I will also need to check with Tennis Australia that Ash Barty is in support of this name. Once endorsed by Council, a park name sign and history panel will be erected on the site.

HYDE RD REFUGE

I have really good news on progress of the new refuge on Hyde Rd, between the dog park and shops near The Village.

Council has finally approved two important safety improvements.

Firstly, a staggered zebra crossing and centre refuge, which is a much safer design than just a refuge for pedestrians. As you may know $150,000 has been set aside in the Council Budget to deliver the project this year.

Secondly, Council has also supported a speed reduction along Hyde Rd to 50kms per hour. In combination with the staggered zebra crossing and refuge, this should make it much safer for all local residents to cross the road.

In addition, although it's unlikely in the short-term, the intersection of Cansdale St and Hyde Rd does remain listed for traffic lights in future. I will continue requesting the traffic lights, including a green walk signal, in my annual local Budget submission to Council.

This represents the culmination of six years of lobbying and pressure by our local community and I am so pleased that our persistence has paid off. Thank you all for speaking up and I look forward to seeing this important local project delivered in early 2020.

NEW SAM SIGN FOR KING ARTHUR TCE, TENNYSON

In coming weeks, Council will install a new portable flashing speed (SAM) sign outside 114 King Arthur Tce, Tennyson. The sign will flash a slow down message to speeding vehicles passing it and is a part of Council's programme to improve road safety around schools and other traffic hotspots. The signs show a smiley face to vehicles travelling the speed limit and flashes a slow down warning to those speeding and help to quell speeding vehicles and make the area much safer.

The signs provide Council and the police with reliable information about traffic volumes and speeds and have been shown to reduce traffic speeds in streets where it has been located to date by up to 10kms per hour. Once installed the signs generally stay at each location for approximately 8-10 weeks and are continuously rotated throughout the ward.

HOMELESS CONNECT
ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Lagonda St Park Bridge Closure

As you may recall, last year Council announced repairs to the pedestrian bridge in Lagonda Street Park to improve safety and increase the bridge's lifespan.

The bridge is now closed until late 2019, so Council can undertake these works, which include repairing the existing bridge structure and hand rail, embankment protection works, tree trimming, and landscaping works.

Construction will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Some out-of-hours works may be required during the repair works. During construction, access to the bridge will be closed. A temporary detour and signage will be in place along Vallely Street and Lagonda Street to maintain access for pedestrians.
