MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

We have some wonderful events coming up in the next few weeks including free Movies in the Park at Sherwood and Graceville and the annual Sherwood Community Festival. Check out all the details below.

Design plans are underway for the fort upgrade at the Sherwood Arboretum children's playground. This year I am investing $100,000 to replace the aged forts with new junior and senior forts. The Sherwood State School Student Council are running a consultative process to select the preferred design from Council's three shortlisted suppliers. I'll let you know how they go.

The Day for Daniel is on Friday and as part of Council's Active School Travel programme Graceville SS, Sherwood SS and CTK will all be wearing something red and walking to school from the basketball court at Graceville Memorial Oval. The walking buses will leave from 8am to Sherwood and 8.15am to Graceville SS and CTK. Both programmes have an important child safety message at their heart and I thank our local schools and police for getting involved.

Regards, Nicole

MOGGILL RD ROUNDABOUT UPDATE

Brisbane City Council has finally provided answers to my questions about the Moggill Rd Round-a-bout upgrade. I also met with Council's project team to discuss the draft designs and came away with even more questions.

This is a complex project with a large number of incidental impacts for local traffic movements. You can read the answers here. Most of them are fairly generic answers. Here are some highlights (all times are estimates):

  • Option A (T-intersection) - AM peak travel time -  25s slower; PM peak travel time - 12s faster;
  • option B (Overpass) - AM peak travel time 8s faster; PM peak travel time - 16s faster;
  • traffic signal phasing has not been determined;
  • the length of the slip lane in Option B and merge control is not determined yet;
  • access to the Indooroopilly strip shops will be via the McDonalds intersection  (Allwood St) and Clarence Rd, as Keating St becomes left in-left out only;
  • no cycling facilities;
  • no decision on the future use of remnant land around the round-about site; and
  • the project does not upgrade Coonan St south of the McDonalds intersection (Allwood St).

Neither Option A nor Option B have enough information yet to make an informed decision. However, Option A will make things worse for traffic using Coonan St in the AM peak by approximately 25s. Council is seeking feedback in the next few weeks. I have been advised the plan is then to choose one option and prepare a business case, with the preferred option to be released for further consultation in early 2020. It is really hard to see how this will benefit residents in the south-western suburbs other than an expected reduction in accident severity. In my view an overpass is needed, but the current draft design raises more questions than answers with so many design variables and technical issues not determined.

It is critical that you speak up now, as Council will make a decision that could adversely impact on our community for decades. Email your feedback to cityprojects@brisbane.qld.gov.au or call the project team on 1800 010 705.

LOCAL PARKS UPDATE

Dunlop Park Learn to Ride Track

Following completion of the new children's playground, this year $50,000 has been allocated for a learn to ride scooter circuit near the new playground at Dunlop Park, Corinda.

Council is currently designing a new track adjacent to the playground, which will have signals and lines to help beginners learn to ride their bikes and scooters safely.

Plans are being finalised with installation planned for early next year.

Robert Vickers Place, Oxley Named

Another iconic Oxley musician was recognised this month by Brisbane City Council with Robert Vickers Place named after the Go Betweens bassist.

This is wonderful recognition of the rock and roll talent nurtured locally at Corinda SHS and Oxley. This follows recognition of Ed Kuepper Park just up the road in Oxley.

Thanks to Cr Steve Griffiths for working with Terry and local residents to celebrate Robert and Oxley's cultural contribution to Brisbane.

CORINDA DOG PARK CATCH UP
REMEMBRANCE DAY 2019

Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, one minutes silence is observed throughout the country in remembrance of those who lost their lives during war.

This year, Tennyson Ward will commemorate Remembrance Day with two local RSL services held by the Stephens RSL and the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL.

The Sherwood-Indooroopilly Sub Branch RSL 2019 Remembrance Day service will commence in Graceville Memorial Park, at the Cenotaph, at 10.30am, Monday, November 11.

The Stephens Sub Branch RSL 2019 Remembrance Day service will commence in Yeronga Memorial Park, at the Cenotaph, at 10.30am, Monday, November 11.

All are welcome to attend these services to pay their respects to those Australians who lost their lives or suffered during war and armed conflict.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

The portable flashing speed (SAM) signs on Oxley Rd, Graceville; Randolph St, Graceville; Graceville Ave, Graceville; and Oxley Rd, Sherwood have shown some interesting results.

During non-school zone periods, 68 vehicles or 0.5% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted 60km/h speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 52km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 7kms to 45km/hr within the speed camera range.

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Lahey's Mill Stabilisation Works

Stabilisation works on the sawdust separator at heritage-listed Lahey's Mill, which sits within the Sherwood Bus Depot, are now complete. Support columns for the hoppers within the sawdust separator, a remnant from the original mill, were nearing the end of their life and required stabilisation.

Works involved erecting a steel scaffold beneath the two hoppers and then a steel frame and lightweight roof to support the structure. The existing support columns were retained after completion of works.

The support frame and lightweight roof have been designed to be sympathetic to the original structure and its industrial use. Two heritage architects have assessed the proposal to ensure the works are sympathetic and consistent with the heritage values of the site.

Lahey's Mill was constructed in 1910 by the Lahey Family, early pioneers in the Queensland timber industry, and was added to the Heritage Places Register in 2011.
