MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

This month I've prepared a ward-wide newsletter so there is a little bit of news from right around Tennyson Ward's nine suburbs below.

My congratulations to Jennifer Bradder-Denning (18) and Zoë Green (17) who have recently been awarded the prestigious Queen's Guide and Black Opal honours respectively at the Oxley Girl Guides for their significant volunteering efforts in our community. The Guides, aged between 5 and 18 years, are grouped into patrols by age and undertake a number of fun skills and service based activities at the Ellen St Hut. They meet weekly during school terms. Call 0412 417 990 if you are interested in joining or becoming a volunteer leader.

I have bad news on the 196 Bus extension into Yeronga. 1000 residents signed the petition to add a Yeronga loop. As a result Council wrote to the State Government asking for an extension and Translink has written back saying no. Apparently it will "duplicate" existing rail services.  I guess Translink is unaware it's up to 2km from Yeronga West to Yeronga Station. I'll be taking this up with our State Member and Transport Minister, Mark Bailey. You can read a copy of the letter here.

Regards, Nicole

Ps...please come along to the Oxley Creek Parkland community open day on Saturday, 30 November from 12pm 4pm and have your say about the future of this important precinct.

OXLEY CREEK PARKLAND REVITALISATION

Planning is now underway for a major upgrade to the busy recreational hub at Graceville Riverside Parklands at the mouth of Oxley Creek.

The precinct was identified in the $100m Oxley Creek Transformation Project masterplan as one of 14 projects to be delivered along Oxley Creek corridor over the life of the 20 year project.

Come along to the community open day on Saturday, 30 November from 12pm - 4pm at the Boat Park to have your say. There will be games for kids, food and displays to spark ideas.

Council is seeking feedback on a range of concepts including:

  • a major playground upgrade to the Boat Park at Simpson Playground
  • new boating, canoeing and fishing access and facilities
  • upgrades to the Sea Scouts Hall for community groups
  • new park facilities eg BBQs, seating, equipment and more
  • possible function space/café/food truck commercial space
  • improved pathway connectivity and pedestrian access
  • waterplay
  • indigenous and heritage interpretation
  • creative lighting and place making.

The Sea Scouts and Sailability need a new pontoon to provide safer access to launch boats but there's been no money in the Council Budget. The Brisbane Canoe Club have been operating out of containers for five years since their previous home in Ken Fletcher Park fell into the River. This is our chance to help them get what they need to support river life in our district!

And don't forget to vote for improving the health of the waterway corridor. Attracting people to use the Creek is great but upstream contamination is regularly toxic.

Council is contributing $5m pa towards the funding of the masterplan with the first projects being delivered upstream at the Larapinta Adventure Playground and Archerfield Wetlands.

It critical that our community speaks up to get the mix of investment in new facilities right.  This is a once in a generation chance to seek major improvements to our very popular riverfront parklands and facilities. Have your say!

LOCAL PARKS UPDATE

Sherwood Arboretum Playground Update

Over the past few weeks students at Sherwood State School have been considering three options for a playground upgrade at the Sherwood Arboretum. The School's Student Council undertook a democratic lunchtime voting process with a total 398 votes cast via paddle pop sticks. The winner, with 43% of the vote, was option three by Austek, pictured. Option two received 33% of the vote and option one 23%.

The two old forts will be removed and the replacement play equipment includes senior and junior play spaces with slides, climbing, balance and agility equipment and more. I am so pleased that children who will use the playground had a meaningful say in the design of the new play equipment. Installation will occur in the new year once heritage approval from the State has been granted.

Hyde Rd Dog Off Leash Area Maintenance Works

Starting early next year, when weather conditions are more favourable, Council will begin works to remediate the patches of dirt within the Hyde Rd Park dog off leash area (DOLA).

Due to recent hot weather and lack of rain, Council have delayed these works to ensure the grass will take and grow well.

Works will include returfing of the bare patches to make the area more even and help make sure dogs leave the park as clean as when they arrived!

Graceville War Memorial Upgrade

Work is now underway on an upgrade to the Graceville War Memorial thanks to a lot of hard work behind the scenes by the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL. The War Memorial or cenotaph is 100 years old this year and I am delighted to have provided $5,000 towards restoration of the sandstone and better access to the base of the heritage listed memorial. A big thank you to Mark Bailey and Graham Perrett who also continued funds to this important community heritage project. Next year Graceville Memorial Park turns 100 and I'm working with the RSL and Oxley Chelmer History Group on new signage, commemorative and trees projects to be unveiled next year.

CITY PLANNING CHANGES

There are some changes to Brisbane's planning rules that have recently been approved by Council and some more are on the way.

Changes to come into effect include:

  • banning townhouses in low density areas (previously they were allowed on large blocks over 3000sqm);
  • increasing car parking requirements for units and townhouses (the were cut by the Lord Mayor in 2014 and as a result many unit blocks now have inadequate parking);
  • additional homes, commercial buildings and significant properties protected and heritage listed around the City; and
  • significant City vistas, e.g. ANZAC Square, protected.

For many years I have been moving motions to ensure all pre-1946 and pre-1911 homes are protected but this has been voted down every time by the Lord Mayor and his "team" who command the majority at Council. Many significant character homes remain at risk of demolition. Saving our suburbs gracious character homes is an issue residents raise with me frequently and I will keep fighting for planning changes to ensure they are properly protected.

Of concern is a new proposal being pushed by Planning Chair Matthew Bourke to allow longer hours of operation and high buildings in industrial area as part of Brisbane's Industrial Strategy. I voted against this change at Council and will provide more details to residents when consultation occurs.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

74,426 or 28% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 58km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 2km to 56km/h within the speed camera range.

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Walter Taylor Bridge Works

Work is being undertaken during the off-peak period between 9:30am and 2:30pm to minimise traffic impact. The works will not require any lane closures. On Wharf Street a reduced lane width will lower the speed limit to 40km/hr. Detailed traffic management plans have been developed to support these closures, with road signage, reduced speed limits and traffic controllers in place to safely direct all bridge users.

Tree Removals

Hyde Road Park, Yeronga

South's Junior Cricket Club has been granted approval for the installation of a new cricket pitch and junior oval at the existing Ron Porter Oval next to the old RSPCA site.
