MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Merry Christmas

With the rain last night comes the mess today. There is a huge amount of organic debris down across roads, parks and footpaths.  Please call Council on 34038888 or my office on 34038605 to report any problems.  You can also log clean up jobs with Council online at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or via Council's facebook page. Council officers are out doing inspections today but if there is a problem in your street please report it as soon as possible.

Congratulations to all the grade 6 and grade 12 students graduating in recent weeks. It has been wonderful to share in these events and celebrate the achievements of our wonderful local schools.

I hope as Christmas approaches you have the chance to spend time with your family and friends over the holidays and recharge for 2020.

Thank you to the Junction Fest team for the wonderful Christmas celebration on Saturday and The Fairfield Christian Family Church for hosting the biggest ever community carols at Robinson Park yet. I am so pleased to support these wonderful events in our community.

Merry Christmas and have a very safe and prosperous New Year, Regards, Nicole.

ISPWICH ROAD TUNNEL?

Some of you may have heard reports last week about Council looking at a Tunnel under Ipswich Rd Annerley. As you know I have been working with local community and pushing Council to undertake road and pedestrian upgrades for some years. It turns out that Council has been doing planning behind the scenes but has been sitting on the reports.

One of those reports looks at the future of Ipswich Rd between Woolloongabba and Granard Rd, Rocklea. Currently 65,000 vehicles per day use Ipswich Rd and that is supposed to increase by 63% to 105,000 by 2031. It's also a crash hot spot with 400 -500 accidents over five years and has poor pedestrian, cycling and public transport amenity. Ipswich Rd divides our local community and puts people at risk. It is a dangerous place for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists and has been shockingly neglected by the Council for decades.

The Council investigation contains a number of recommendations, one of which is to conduct a pre-feasibility study into a tunnel under Ipswich Rd.  We need innovative solutions along Ipswich Rd that get through traffic to its destination efficiently and reclaims surface streets for local traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. A Nundah-style bypass tunnel under Annerley Junction may be just the catalyst needed to spark urban renewal and reunite and revitalise Annerley. After decades of neglect Council must fast-track the tunnel feasibility study and undertake consultation with the local councillors and our community on the way forward.

I wanted to get the report out into the open and get the conversation Council has been ignoring started.  I want Council to invest in a safer, more efficient Ipswich Rd that revitalises and connects our community, including proper turning lanes at the Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd intersection.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS

What a busy year it has been. Here are some highlights from the year:

  • new playgrounds completed in Annerley and Corinda with more on the way in Yeronga, Fairfield and Sherwood Arboretum in the New Year;
  • new pedestrian upgrades around Corinda SS, Graceville SS and Mary Mac and Our Lady's and plans are underway for a zebra crossing outside Graceville Rail Station;
  • we've finally got the State and Council talking to fix the low rail Bridge at Corinda/Sherwood (widen not raise) and to protect significant bushland and open space at the Oxley Secondary College;
  • we've pushed Council to act on Ipswich Rd - it's early days yet, but planning is underway;
  • four new footpaths delivered, Equity Street Annerley fixed (Lagonda to go) and dozens fixed;
  • major stormwater projects completed in Yeronga and Corinda;
  • new SAM and Slow Down signs installed at speeding hot spots;
  • dog park upgrades at Fairfield and Yeronga and several dog friendly events;
  • wonderful events like Active School Travel activities and Movies in the Park around the ward;
  • dozens of grants delivered for festivals, events and activities in our local community.

None of this would have been possible without the support of a wide range of volunteers and community groups who work so hard behind the scenes to make community life so wonderful.

There is of course so much more to do in 2020 and with your help I will keep pushing for all the local infrastructure upgrades our area needs.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

Venner Road, Annerley is posted as 60km/hr. The sign collected data for an 11 week period from 9 July to 28 September, 2019. During this time 355,528 vehicles (av. 4,336 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

16,007 or 4.5% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 66km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 5km to 61km/h within the speed camera range.
