MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Merry Christmas

With the rain last night comes the mess today.There is a huge amount of organic debris down across roads, parks and footpaths.  Please call Council on 34038888 or my office on 34038605 to report any problems.  You can also log clean up jobs with Council online at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or via Council's facebook page. Council officers are out doing inspections today but if there is a problem in your street please report it as soon as possible.

Congratulations to all the grade 6 and grade 12 students graduating in recent weeks. It has been wonderful to share in these events and celebrate the achievements of our wonderful local schools.

I hope as Christmas approaches you have the chance to spend time with your family and friends over the holidays and recharge for 2020. There are still several wonderful Christmas events on over the next two weeks, plus a huge range of school holiday activities for families. Check them out below.

Merry Christmas and have a very safe and prosperous New Year, Regards, Nicole.

PS also there is still time to have your say on upgrades at the Boat Park to improve water and play facilities at the mouth of Oxley Creek.  You can fill out the survey below. Let's speak up for the Sea Scouts, Sailability and Brisbane Canoeing Club and ask for better pontoon and river access together with any great ideas you have for this most loved parkland area.

MOGGILL RD ROUNDABOUT UPDATE

Brisbane City Council has now selected Option B, the overpass, as the preferred design for the Moggill Rd/Coonan St intersection update, pictured.  It was the least worst option of the two presented to us, with Option A resulting in longer travel times for Coonan St users. There have been some changes to the design including:

  • new access to the Indooroopilly Central Shops from Coonan St;
  • Stamford Rd to remain open;

I still have serious concerns about the project which clearly favours east-west traffic using Moggill Rd. The impact of the traffic lights on the overpass Bridge, the length of the merge to Moggill Rd and its functionality and the increased pressure of  the Allwood St, Coonan Street intersection are all big unknowns. Plus the project does not address the diabolical southern end of Coonan St around the Westminster Rd intersection and connection to the Bridge. A lost opportunity.

We are in Council's hands now as the detailed design plans and business case are prepared.  The new plans will be released for consultation in 2020. I will update everyone when the new, detailed plans are available.

You can read more on Council's website here.

LAUREL AVE TREE PROJECT UPDATE

In early 2020 Council will move onto the next stage of tree rehabilitation works along Laurel Ave between the old police college and Jarrott St, Chelmer.

Many of the trees have struggled in recent years and several have been lost.

The works involve creating subterranean drainage known as "structural soil" around 28 trees to provide a more sympathetic growing environment for the heritage listed Camphur Laurels. There will be about 1.5m of roadworks with new kerb and asphalt to be replaced on top of the underground drainage system, pictured. There will also be further garden bed upgrades and deco footpath treatment around the tree roots.

Council is consulting directly with owners along this stretch of Laurel Ave to discuss any footpath works and will preserve existing garden beds or grass as requested.

Works are due to be undertaken in March/April 2020, weather permitting.

This is a really innovative project that will help give better support and longevity to these significant trees.

HONOUR AVE PEDESTRIAN UPGRADE PETITION

I was recently approached by a Chelmer resident to upgrade the pedestrian crossing point near the staircase overpass over the rail line between Honour Ave and Graceville Memorial Park.  This is a busy crossing point for school students and local residents heading to the park.  In response, a petition has been established that you can sign here. Currently there is a refuge at this location but no safety cage or zebra crossing. Thank you to Namit for getting this idea going!

I have installed two rotating SAM slow down signs along Honour Ave with the Graceville one in positon before the shops heading southbound near Verney Rd W at the moment. In addition, there is a permanent slow down sign heading northbound before the shops near Wiley St. Also listed for funding in Council's capital works are refuges at the corner of Honour Ave and Malborough St, Sherwood and Honour Ave near the underpass entrance to Chelmer Rail Station near the intersection of Chelmer St E.  We are also waiting on Council's traffic engineers to reply to the community survey for a speed limit review along Honour Ave. No word yet. I will update residents in the New Year with the results.

The Graceville Riverside Parklands, known locally as the 'Boat Park', Survey has been extended to allow residents to share their thoughts and ideas for the future of the parkland.

It is fantastic to hear that so many residents took the opportunity to share their thoughts at The Graceville Riverside Parklands Community Ideas Day.

Residents who were unable to make it on the day and would like to offer feedback and ideas now have until 20 December 2019 to complete the survey, which can be found here.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS

What a busy year it has been. Here are some highlights from the year:

  • new playgrounds completed in Annerley and Corinda with more on the way in Yeronga, Fairfield and Sherwood Arboretum in the New Year;
  • new pedestrian upgrades around Corinda SS, Graceville SS and Mary Mac and Our Lady's and plans are underway for a zebra crossing outside Graceville Rail Station;
  • we've finally got the State and Council talking to fix the low rail Bridge at Corinda/Sherwood (widen not raise) and to protect significant bushland and open space at the Oxley Secondary College;
  • we've pushed Council to act on Ipswich Rd - it's early days yet but planning is underway;
  • four new footpaths delivered, Equity Street Annerley fixed (Lagonda to go) and dozens fixed;
  • major stormwater projects completed in Yeronga and Corinda;
  • new SAM and Slow Down signs installed at speeding hot spots;
  • dog park upgrades at Fairfield and Yeronga and several dog friendly events;
  • wonderful events like Active School Travel activities and Movies in the Park around the ward;
  • dozens of grants delivered for festivals, events and activities in our local community.

None of this would have been possible without the support of a wide range of volunteers and community groups who work so hard behind the scenes to make community life so wonderful.

There is of course so much more to do in 2020 and with your help I will keep pushing for all the local infrastructure upgrades our area needs.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

Oxley Road, Sherwood is posted as 60km/h. The sign collected data for an 11 week period from 9 July to 28 September, 2019. During this time 563,788 vehicles (av. 6,875 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

80,691 or 14.3% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 60km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 8km to 52km/h within the speed camera range.

Please slow down around the busy school and pedestrian hot spots!
