HYDE RD REFUGE UPDATE

I'm pleased to announce that after six years of petitions and pressure it's fantastic to see that the pedestrian refuge for Hyde Rd is finally being built. Council have advised that works will start in January weather permitting, and will take approximately two weeks to complete. Work will be 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, so please slow down on Hyde Rd while construction is underway.

The works will include:

  • Installing a staggered zebra crossing on Hyde Rd at Venner Rd;
  • Building out the kerb at the crossing point;
  • Upgrading and installing kerb ramps;
  • Installing line marking on Hyde Rd, including yellow and no stopping lines to improve motorist and pedestrian visibility;
  • Turfing; and
  • Street lighting upgrades

Hyde Rd is also being converted to 50kms, so watch out for the new signage in due course.

These works will improve sightlines and promote slower and safer traffic behaviour, ultimately making it far safer for pedestrians to cross. Thank you for speaking up to improve road safety in our community. I look forward to seeing this project completed.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATES

Yeerongpilly Green Retail/Commercial DA

A development application has been lodged by Consolidated Properties for the newest stage of the Yeerongpilly Green project at 25 Fig Tree St, Yeerongpilly (near the Council building). The proposal is for a mixed use office, retail and commercial development including a supermarket, cinema, gym, childcare and associated shops. The proposal is in line with the State and Council's planning scheme and is Code Assessable, meaning there will be no formal public consultation via the black and white notice sign. There are a range of technical issues around, design, access, parking that Council is working with the developer to review. You can review the plans on Council's PD online site here  and enter the street address or A005334493 when prompted.

Yeronga Village DA

A development application has also been lodged for the Yeronga Village site at 429 Fairfield Rd, Yeronga (cnr Kadumba St). The proposal is for a mixed use retail and commercial development including a gym, childcare, health care and retail and food shops. Parking at ground level will be reduced and new level of underground car parking will be built.  The site is zoned District Centre so the proposal is in line with Council's planning scheme zoning and heights. However, Council has raised an extensive list of technical issues around, bulk and scale, design, access, traffic, flooding, noise, stormwater, trees and streetscape and Council is working with the developer to make changes. I hope the developer is listening and makes some changes to improve the project. You can review the plans on Council PD online site here  and enter the street address or A005332531 when prompted.

While both of these DAs are code assessable you can make a submission to Council. These shops need to work for us as locals so they enhance our local area and contribute to the vibrancy of the neighbourhood.

PARKS UPDATE

Good news! Construction works will commence in February for two new playgrounds at Rowlinson Park, Yeronga and Turley St Park, Fairfield. Installation works will take approximately one month, weather permitting.

Turley St Park, Fairfield $108,000 upgrade, works commence week of 10 February and include:

  • a net fort with climbing and monkey bars
  • a little slide and a big enclosed slide
  • interactive panels for little people underneath
  • swings (baby, children's and basket)
  • shade sail and seating.

Rowlinson Park, Yeronga $105,000 upgrade, works commence on 24 February and include:

  • new agility fort
  • toddler play treehouse fort with multiple slides and interactive panels
  • baby, child and basket swings
  • reuse of existing shade sail and play footprint.

A big thank you to all those residents who made suggestions and offered feedback on the designs. The new play equipment is on the way!

Plans are currently being drafted for a revamp of Hefferan Park, Annerley and will be released for further public consultation in the coming weeks. The concept based on community feedback includes edible gardens, additional tree plantings, new pathways, seating, play equipment, interpretative signage (indigenous and local history) and more.
