MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

I hope to see you at the Yeronga Pet Fair on Saturday 29 Feb at Yeronga Memorial Park. Entry is FREE, and there will be plenty of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family to enjoy. I'll be running a pet trick competition, so bring your beloved pet along and win a fabulous prize. There will also be discounted vet services available on the day, and you can book ahead here for further discounts.

Council is still refusing to take action on Ipswich Rd and Venner Rd. Our community relies on both these busy roads. They are dangerous, with a distinguished local doctor well known to many off us dying on Venner Rd last year. You can read my plan below. With traffic on Ipswich Rd forecast to almost double over the next 12 years Council must act now to improve road, pedestrian and cycling, reduce congestion and provide better public transport solutions. Please sign the petition here to speak up and tell Council their inaction is not ok.

Regards, Nicole.

IPSWICH/VENNER RD PETITION

For too long the Lord Mayor and Council have neglected road safety issues in Annerley. Three people have died unnecessarily, numerous injuries, traffic congestion and a lack of amenity for local residents who must use Ipswich Rd and its feeder streets. The lack of planning and investment for the southern suburbs transport infrastructure is wrong and must change.

Over the past five years there have been 95 recorded crashes, nine involving pedestrians in the survey area (Ipswich Rd between Annerley Rd and Cracknell Rd).  Ipswich Rd is a well-known state-wide top five accident hot spot. Traffic volumes are forecast to almost double over the next 12 years. Still no action.

Council has undertaken a number of reviews, including Move Safe and a Pedestrian Road Safety Review but has not acted on the recommendations.  Other promised reviews are being kept secret.

Sign the petition here  and help me force Council to work with our community to fix Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd and revitalise Annerley by:

  • reducing the speed limit through Annerley Junction shopping precinct to 40kms;
  • installing flashing school zone signage to protect JPSS children crossing the road;
  • upgrading the intersection of Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd and Waterton St to include proper signalised turning lanes;
  • undertaking a feasibility study for a tunnel bypass under Ipswich Rd to reclaim surface streets for local traffic movements, better public transport, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure;
  • installing a green arrow or zebra crossing at the intersection of Ekibin Rd and Ipswich Rd;
  • undertaking a Village Precinct Project in Annerley Junction to improve amenity, safety and build revitalise community spaces;
  • building new footpath, lighting and cycling infrastructure to promote active travel;
  • delivering better local bus services through Annerley;
  • delivering the promised Venner Rd Freight Bypass to take trucks off Venner Rd; and
  • delivering traffic calming solutions in Annerley side streets to discourage rat running.

Ipswich Rd divides our community and Council must take action before another life is lost.

FAIRFIELD RAIL STATION

I recently wrote to both the Queensland State Government and Council about some missing elements of the Fairfield Rail Station Upgrade. For some years I have been asking Council and the State Government to incorporate a safe, active travel crossing point across Mildmay St, Fairfield between Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre and Fairfield Rail Station. I have done this via, Council's Dutton Park-Fairfield Neighbourhood Plan and with the Hon Mark Bailey and several times via correspondence with Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk.

Building a new station with universal access is great but not if it's unsafe to get to it. There must be a safe crossing point, either a zebra crossing or  green walk signal between the Station and Fairfield Gardens. The entrance to the station is very close to Ashby St which is a blind corner. Pedestrians will continue to be at risk if a safe crossing point is not included in the design.

Here's a summary of the changes to the project I am seeking:

  • safe crossing point across Mildmay St, Fairfield - either a zebra crossing or green walk signal (zebra preferred);
  • safe crossing point across Equity St, Annerley - either a zebra crossing or green walk signal (zebra preferred);
  • safety fencing along Mildmay St, particularly towards the southern end to stop unsafe crossing close to the Ashby St intersection;
  • a new concrete footpath on Equity St station frontage to replace the old bitumen;
  • bike racks on the Mildmay St side of the station;
  • shared paths on both frontages that are at least 2 but preferably 3.5ms wide;
  • appropriate warning signs on the station frontage and vehicle approaches;
  • work with Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre to allocate some commuter parking in a dedicated area of the centre carpark;
  • shade trees in the landscaping (natives please);
  • CCTV and lighting along the footpaths on the station frontage and crossing points referred to above.

You can also send through your idea on the proposed design to info@unityalliance.com.au.

PARKS UPDATE

Work on the $95,000 public lighting project through Norm Rose Park, Fairfield is due to commence this month. The aim is provide a safety pathway through the park to Fairfield Station and shopping centre for local residents. A number of other parks are also listed for pathway lighting including Leyshon Park, Hyde Rd Park, Brisbane Corso Park and Orient Rd Park.

Work on the new $108,000 Turley St, Fairfield playground is well underway and is due to be completed within weeks. The new playground includes:

  • a net fort with climbing and monkey bars;
  • a little slide and a big enclosed slide;
  • interactive panels for little people underneath;
  • swings (baby, children's and basket); and
  • shade sail and seating.
Work is due to commence by the end of February on the Rowlinson Park, Yeronga $105,000 upgrade and will take approximately one month weather permitting. The upgrade includes:
  • a new agility fort;
  • toddler play treehouse fort with multiple slides and interactive panels;
  • baby, child and basket swings; and
  • reuse of existing shade sail and play footprint.
A big thank you to all those residents who made suggestions for the new play equipment.

Council has developed a draft concept plan for the Hefferan
Park, Annerley upgrade. Click here  to see the plans. They are very conceptual. I look forward to your feedback with comments due by the end of March.

The upgrade includes:
  • new native tree plantings;
  • planter boxes with edible gardens;
  • seating and games tables;
  • small playground equipment, possibly a swing (TBC);
  • new pathways;
  • interpretive signage for Indigenous history and the bomb shelter; and
  • a community library.

Given the scope of the works, it will be done over two years with $50,000 invested this year and an additional $50,000 in the new financial year.

SAM SIGNS

Sam Signs Get Results

Sarah St, Annerley is posted as 50km/h. The sign collected data for a 12 week period from 1 October to 26 December, 2019. During this time 229,242 vehicles (av. 2,635 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

87,883 or 38.3% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 59km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 5km to 54km/h within the speed camera range.

Please slow down around the busy school and pedestrian hot spots!

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Road resurfacing works Fairfield Rd, Fairfield

Council is undertaking road resurfacing works on Fairfield Rd, Fairfield from Stimpson St to Cornwall St. Works will take place 10 to 20 February 2020 from 7pm to 5am, weather conditions permitting.

Council requests that residents do not park their vehicles within the work zone during construction hours. Any vehicles parked on the road when works are scheduled to occur will be relocated to facilitate the works.

Tree Removal and Playground Closure, Jacaranda Park, Yeronga

The playground at Jacaranda Park, Yeronga is closed while Council undertake an urgent tree removal of a Jacaranda tree located 1 metre away from the play equipment. The tree is decaying and as a result presents a safety hazard.

The removal should be completed by the end of February. Due to the parkland being contaminated land, replacement planting will occur elsewhere in the Ward.
