MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

There is a lot of activity around the ward at the moment as our local trust fund footpath and park projects are being built. Some have been slightly delayed due to the wet weather, but it is great to see projects underway in Corinda - Dunlop Park learn to ride track (now open), Sherwood - Aroberetum playground upgrade, Fairfield - Turley St Park new playground, Yeronga - Rowlinson Park new playground and Annerley - Hefferan Park concept plan out for consultation at the moment.

Work is almost complete on the Graceville Memorial Oval cenotaph upgrade to make it easier for veterans to access the 100-year-old war memorial. Construction is also about to commence on the new memorial wall to recognise all conflicts at Yeronga Memorial Park. A big thank you to the RSLs and Matt at Barefoot Landscape who has put in a huge amount of work behind the scenes to get the Yeronga project to fruition. I am really proud to support the work of the RSL's stewardship of our significant commemorative places. Check out these upgrades on ANZAC Day. Service details are listed below.

I'll see you at the Chelmer Movie in the Park at the Sherwood AFL Club on Saturday night. Fabulous food from 5.30pm and Toy Story 4 will screen at 6.45pm or on dark.

Regards, Nicole.

IPSWICH RD, ANNERLEY PETITION

For too long the Lord Mayor and Council have neglected road safety issues in Annerley. Three people have died unnecessarily, numerous injuries, traffic congestion and a lack of amenity for local residents who must use Ipswich Rd and its feeder streets. The lack of planning and investment for the southern suburbs transport infrastructure is wrong and must change.

Over the past five years there have been 95 recorded crashes, nine involving pedestrians in the survey area (Ipswich Rd between Annerley Rd and Cracknell Rd). Ipswich Rd is a well-known state-wide top five accident hot spot. Traffic volumes are forecast to almost double over the next 12 years. Still no action.

Council has undertaken a number of reviews, including Move Safe and a Pedestrian Road Safety Review, but has not acted on the recommendations. Other promised reviews are being kept secret.

Sign the petition here  and help me force Council to work with our community to fix Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd and revitalise Annerley by:

  • reducing the speed limit through Annerley Junction shopping precinct to 40kms;
  • installing flashing school zone signage to protect JPSS children crossing the road;
  • upgrading the intersection of Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd and Waterton St to include proper signalised turning lanes;
  • undertaking a feasibility study for a tunnel bypass under Ipswich Rd to reclaim surface streets for local traffic movements, better public transport, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure;
  • installing a green arrow or zebra crossing at the intersection of Ekibin Rd and Ipswich Rd;
  • undertaking a Village Precinct Project in Annerley Junction to improve amenity, safety and revitalise community spaces;
  • building new footpath, lighting and cycling infrastructure to promote active travel;
  • delivering better local bus services through Annerley;
  • delivering the promised Venner Rd Freight Bypass to take trucks off Venner Rd; and
  • delivering traffic calming solutions in Annerley side streets to discourage rat running.

Ipswich Rd divides our community and Council must take action before another life is lost.

PLAYGROUND UPDATE

Dunlop Park, Corinda

Final touches are being applied to the new Learn to Ride track at Corinda after slight delays due to the wet weather. The new concrete track has all the signs and lines to help teach learner riders in a safe space. It's the culmination of the playground upgrade completed last year. Thanks to all the Corinda residents who contributed their ideas to this park upgrade project.

Sherwood Arboretum, Sherwood

The new playground at the Sherwood Arboretum is now under construction. The two old forts will be removed and the replacement play equipment includes senior and junior play spaces with slides, climbing, balance and agility equipment and more.

Turley St Park, Fairfield

The new $108,000 upgrade to the Turley St Park playground is now under construction. Works include:

  • a net fort with climbing and monkey bars;
  • a little slide and a big enclosed slide;
  • interactive panels for little people underneath;
  • swings (baby, children's and basket); and
  • shade sail and seating.

Hefferan Park, Annerley

I'm seeking resident's views on the draft concept plan for Hefferan Park, which are avilable here. Please submit any feedback by the end of March.

The upgrade will include:

  • new native tree plantings;
  • planter boxes with edible gardens;
  • seating and games tables;
  • small playground equipment, possibly a swing (TBC);
  • new pathways;
  • interpretive signage for Indigenous history and the bomb shelter; and
  • a community library.

Rowlinson Park, Yeronga

Construction on the new playground is due to commence on Monday 16 March, weather permitting, and will take approximately one month.

Ed Kuepper Park, Oxley

Construction is well underway on the new playground at Ed Kuepper Park, Oxley.
