MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

The end of the year is fast approaching, with a range of wonderful community activities and events on over coming weeks. The Sherwood Community Festival at the Sherwood Arboretum will be bigger and better than ever this year. Come along between 3-7pm to explore all the stalls, music, food, arts, rides and fun activities on offer this Saturday, 18 November. I hope to see you there for a chat and some great fun celebrating the best our community has to offer.

Congratulations to all the year 12 students graduating this week. I’ m thrilled to attend and celebrate the achievement of these smart, capable and amazing young people at local graduation events at Corinda SHS, Yeronga SHS and St Aidan’s. Best wishes to the students studying hard for their final exams over the next few weeks.

Still no word from the Lord Mayor about Budget cuts locally, but yesterday during question time I asked whether the Lord Mayor would honour his commitment to resurface Venner Rd, Annerley. He says it will be done but wouldn’t confirm a timeframe. Not only does Venner Rd need resurfacing but safety improvements are urgently needed. I’ve been keeping the pressure on and there are some glimmers of hope. Firstly, Council has now listed the intersection of Venner Rd/ Ipswich Rd / Waterton St for an upgrade. Fully controlled lights and turning lanes are needed. Secondly, a new speed limit review is underway after the first resulted in no change by Council. Venner Rd is a critical east-west link and it needs to be safer and more efficient for all users.

I am keeping the pressure on to make Annerley, and all suburbs, safer.

Regards, Nicole

Ps...don’t forget to sign the petition to resurface Oxley Rd — it’s in appalling condition in many parts and resurfacing is not on Council's agenda at all.

PARKS UPDATE

Works are well underway on the park upgrade at Taylor Bridge Reserve, Chelmer. A fabulous  new nature play area is on the way, as well as a swing, seating, fencing and bins. This piece of riverside parkland flooded in 2011 and 2022, and I'm really pleased to see this important flood recovery project so close to completion.

Bring your little people and join me to celebrate the opening of the new nature play area on Sunday, 3 December from 4:30-6pm. There'll be afternoon tea and face painting for the kids.

21 new shade trees are on the way in Nixon Park, Oxley to complement the shade sail that was installed earlier in the year. The new trees, 20 x Blueberry Ash and 1 x Forest Red Gum, will provide additional shade for the playground, carpark and basketball court. In addition, the new shade sails secured for the playground this provides a much cooler and safer environment for people to enjoy.

SUN SAFE PLAYGROUNDS

A shade sail is on the way for the playground in Hives Park, Sherwood and additional shade sails are on the way for the unshaded section of the playgrounds in Jacaranda Park, Yeronga and Tom O'Neill Park, Oxley as part of Council's 2023-24 Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds programme.

Graceville Riverside Parklands; Hefferan Park, Annerley; Graceville Memorial Park; and the Jolimont St playground at Sherwood Arboretum are on the list for shade sails in 2024-25.

HELP FIX OXLEY ROAD

Like many residents who use Oxley Rd every day I have noticed it is in terrible shape - full of cracks, potholes, slumps and is being held together with black superglue. There is even grass growing though the road in places in Graceville and Oxley.

Recently, I asked the Lord Mayor a question about why Oxley Rd is not being resurfaced, even where it was flooded. In response, he said that Oxley Rd was not a priority and resurfacing was not needed. I imagine he has not driven along Oxley Rd recently. Or perhaps he thinks it will be cheaper to mow than resurface. Even if Council started resurfacing works this year it could be up to 5-6 years before the entire length is done, as major roads are usually resurfaced progressively by suburb in Council’s annual Budget.

I believe that resurfacing Oxley Rd is a priority to make it safer for our local community. Sign the petition and help me send a message to Council that Oxley Rd needs to be resurfaced in Oxley, Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer.
