MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful break over Christmas and the New Year with your family and friends. 2024 is going to be a busy year with the Council election coming up on Saturday, 16 March. A great opportunity to have your say AND get a democracy sausage to support your local school or church!

The ongoing storms and heavy rain have caused havoc around the city with blocked drains, potholes and long grass everywhere. This has been compounded by the Lord Mayor’s 10% Budget cuts to mowing, park and road maintenance - in the middle of summer no less. We are pushing hard to get Council to do the work you pay rates for so if you see a problem, please do not hesitate to report it to my office on 3403 8605 or the Council hotline 24/7 on 3403 8888.

There has been a short delay to the installation of the new zebra crossing at Mildmay St, connecting Fairfield Station and Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre. It is on the way and will now be delivered in February.  I am so pleased to see this project finally being done after a decade of advocacy for better pedestrian safety in Fairfield. I am still pushing Council for the zebra crossing at Appel St, Graceville outside Graceville Rail Station but sadly Council will not stump up the money.

With school resuming next week, I encourage all drivers to slow down, lookout for the 40km/h signs and keep our children safe as they head back to school. I look forward to working with you in 2024 to make our local community an even better place to live and work.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps... see you at one of the great upcoming Movies in the Park on in Tennyson Ward over the next few weeks - Saturday, 3 February Trolls World Tour, Corinda State School, food from 5.30pm, movie from 6.45pm and the quirky and hilarious Hunt for the Wilderpeople at Yeronga Memorial Park, Saturday, 2 March, food and music from 5pm, movie from 7pm.

PARKS UPDATE

Jacaranda Park, Yeronga

A big thank you to all the Yeronga residents who provided their feedback for the Jacaranda Park and playground upgrade in Yeronga. Planning is now underway and funding has been allocated to start the project this year.

Based on the survey responses, the most popular suggestions were:

  • a new all ages children’ s playground;
  • a nature play area;
  • a new BBQ;
  • new taps and bubblers;
  • new shade sail;
  • a learn to ride track; and
  • more Jacaranda trees.

As the Park is a former tip site, just like many local parks in Brisbane, soil testing will be required so the learn to ride track will be delivered as part of stage two. I look forward to sharing some playground design concept plans for residents to review in coming weeks. I also hope to include Yeronga SS and St Sebastian’s students in the design process, so the children who use the park have a say in its design!

Princess St Park, Fairfield

The nesting boxes are now in to support birds and other wildlife in Princess St Park, Fairfield. Work on the new BBQ, picnic seating and shelter, and new park seating will commence in February and be completed by March (weather permitting).

Faulkner Park Dog Park, Graceville

Thank you to everyone who undertook the survey regarding the facilities at Faulkner Park Dog Park, Graceville late last year. Of those surveyed, 50% of people were happy with the existing facilities.

The top 5 priorities for a future upgrade are:

  1. New/more lighting for the small and large dog parks.
  2. Turf remediation and/or artificial turf.
  3. Boundary extension to the small and large dog parks.
  4. Footpath connection to Leybourne St.
  5. Removal/replacement of dog agility equipment.

Maintenance work has been requested for the damaged gate hinge and latches and an automated watering system.

CORINDA LIBRARY TREES

Over the past year, Council arborists have been working to save the trees outside the heritage listed  Corinda Library. Collar rot has undermined the health of the three Camphor Laurel trees and, despite Council’s best efforts , they have died.

The current works include significant tree trimming and dead wooding to ensure the footpath and Library access remains safe. The trees will be retained for habitat value, particularly for nesting birds, and new native trees will be planted to restore the garden. Some night-time road closures of Oxley Rd will be needed for the cherry pickers.

KERBSIDE COLLECTION 2024

CORINDA SHS ROAD SAFETY PROJECT

Council has now developed a draft plan for the $170,000 pedestrian and road safety upgrade around Corinda SHS. The plan includes a pedestrian refuge in Gray Ave to prevent illegal u-turns, a zebra crossing on Lynne Grove Ave, new footpath connections and street lighting upgrades. Some on-street parking may be removed to ensure clear sightlines. Consultation with directly affected residents and the School will commence in early 2024.

Just around the corner in Gray Ave, Council is also upgrading the stairs and installing pedestrian ramps and footpath connections to the popular walking track through Benarrawa Reserve.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION STARTED 115 HYDE RD YERONGA

Public consultation has commenced for the proposed re-development of the old paint factory site at 115 Hyde Rd, Yeronga. Now is the time to have your say about the future of this site before Council makes a final decision. Submissions close on 5 February, 2024 and can be made in writing or online.  You can  download a draft submission here.

In my view, it is appalling that the developer is undertaking the required public consultation over Christmas and the school holidays.

Following lodgement of the initial DA, Council issued a very detailed information request (preliminary assessment) outlining a number of issues the developer was required to address. This included very sensibly separating their proposal into two parts - the reuse of the paint factory site as an arts precinct from the new medium and high-rise residential plan. Disappointingly, the developer has ignored Council’s request to separate the DA into two parts and has only made minor changes to the development application.

The decision to allow high-rise development (eight storeys or possibly more in future) in Yeronga West would be a huge change and has not been considered as part of Council-led city-wide planning changes. As a result, infrastructure that would normally be needed to support densification does not exist in Yeronga West.

Some aspects of the proposal are innovative and welcome, such as reuse of some the existing buildings for arts purposes. Others are concerning, such as the significant number of future high-rise unit blocks and an estimated additional 2000 vehicles per day accessing the site. Finally, some are just plain inadequate, namely the lack of any new infrastructure.

That is why it is critical that residents speak up now about what sort of development, if any, you would support on the site.

If you want to save Yeronga West from high-rise development on the paint factory and other sites along Hyde Rd, now is the time to speak up.

You can  view a copy of the developer’s response to the information request here.

You can view the DA materials on Council’s website here.

HELP FIX OXLEY ROAD

Like many residents who use Oxley Rd every day I have noticed it is in terrible shape - full of cracks, potholes, slumps and is being held together with black superglue. There is even grass growing though the road in places in Graceville and Oxley.

Recently, I asked the Lord Mayor a question about why Oxley Rd is not being resurfaced, even where it was flooded. In response, he said that Oxley Rd was not a priority and resurfacing was not needed. I imagine he has not driven along Oxley Rd recently. Or perhaps he thinks it will be cheaper to mow than resurface. Even if Council started resurfacing works this year it could be up to 5-6 years before the entire length is done, as major roads are usually resurfaced progressively by suburb in Council’s annual Budget.

I believe that resurfacing Oxley Rd is a priority to make it safer for our local community. Sign the petition and help me send a message to Council that Oxley Rd needs to be resurfaced in Oxley, Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer.
