MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

I had my first meeting with the new Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, during the week and discussed a range of issues in the Ward including Budget priorities, new local parkland and bushland opportunities as part of his $20m acquisition announcement, and the future of the Annerley Bookshop. Whilst no solid outcomes yet, the Lord Mayor listened and promised to get back to me.

On the Budget, I am hopeful that we will see some funding fairness in the allocation for important small and big projects in Tennyson Ward. The Council Budget will be handed down on Wednesday, 12 June so I will let you know in a few weeks.

There are a great range of local events coming up over the next few weeks, including the Yeronga State School Fete on Saturday 25 May from 12-7:30pm. I'll see you there!

Regards, Nicole.

PARKS UPDATE

NEW SHADE SAIL - LEYSHON PARK, FAIRFIELD

Council have now installed the new shade sail at the playground in Leyshon Park, Fairfield (opposite William Pde) to replace shade provided by the trees lost in the 2014 super-cell storm.

The shade sail looks great and will provide families with much-needed shelter from the hot Queensland sun. I am still working on additional trees, but as the park is an old tip site, this is proving difficult with Council.

NEW SHELTER - FAIRFIELD PARK DOG OFF LEASH AREA

In coming weeks, upgrade works will be undertaken to the Fairfield Park dog off leash area (DOLA). This includes a 4x4m new shelter and three bench seats, as well as a new connecting concrete footpath. Other minor works will be undertaken to the gates.

I am looking forward to this upgrade, as the new shelter and seating will provide a much-needed shaded rest area for users of the popular dog park.

NEW NAMES FOR TWO YERONGA PARKS

Two Yeronga parks will receive new names in coming weeks after the community petitioned Council late last year. New signage and history panels will be installed at newly-named Ron Goeldner Park at Esplanade, Yeronga and Rigby Place at Heritage Close, Yeronga.

For 60 years Ron Goeldner championed community life in Yeronga. In 1962 Ron, a master builder, built a home with wife Pat on Esplanade Yeronga. He spent his life raising his family, building homes of local residents and contributing to community life in the district. Ron was an active volunteer and office holder in a wide range of community organisations including Neighbourhood Watch, Yeronga District Residents Association, Yeronga Hyde Road Kindergarten, St. Sebastian's Catholic Primary School P&F, Yeronga Dutton Park RSL and Yeronga Services Club and campaigned with the community to save the historic Rhyndarra Military Hospital. Together with wife Pat, Ron was also instrumental in a number of Brisbane and State wide organisations including the City of Brisbane Eisteddfod, the Australian Youth Ballet and the Queensland Allergy Association. Ron was a passionate advocate for the maintenance of this Park, with he and other residents each working to keep it cleared and open such that all could come to share and enjoy this special place beside the river.

The Rigby Family lived in Yeronga and, during World War One and World War Two, and in peace, served their country and their community. Family members who served included Julia (Lyl) Lyllis Rigby, Nurse; William (Jack) John Rigby, Gallipoli; George Henry Rigby, Gallipoli; Gordon Alexander Rigby, Australian Army; and Hubert (Hub) Stanley Rigby, Australian Army. Mr William Alfred Rigby, father of Lyl, Jack, George, Gordon and Hubert, was one of three original owners of the land upon which the Yeronga Dutton Park RSL stands. Julia Rigby (nee Mitchell) was a major proponent of the first avenue of trees created in 1917 in Yeronga Memorial Park.

Look out for the new signs, which should be installed in coming weeks.

GOLD STAR AND LITTLE STARS READING CLUB

The 2019 Gold Star Reading Club program for children aged 6-12 years and the Little Stars Reading Club program for children aged 0-5 years has begun again this year and runs until 31 July.

The program provides fun, incentive based reading activities for children to improve their literacy and reading skills. Membership is free and you can register at your local library.

By reading a minimum of two books (Little Stars) or three books (Gold Star) of their choice each month, completing a series of activities and recording the details in their activity book, children can collect six (Little Stars) or nine (Gold Star) gold stars and monthly incentive rewards.

Children who collect all six or nine gold stars are eligible to:

  • receive a medallion and a certificate of achievement
  • attend their local awards ceremony with their family

To find out more about the program, visit Council's website here or sign up at the Corinda Library now!

QUEENSLAND URBAN UTILITIES CONCEALED LEAK POLICY

Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) have made some changes to their Concealed Leak Policy to help improve the experience for residents who have a concealed leak on their property.

A concealed leak is an underground water leak in the private plumbing pipework servicing a property. These leaks occur on the private property side of the water meter and are usually underground and hidden from view. There are often no visible signs of dampness, which can lead to costly water consumption costs.

QUU's Concealed Leak Policy aims to assist residents who have experienced a concealed leak by offering different levels of compensation, depending on the type of leak and property. For more information on these changes and the Policy, visit QUU's website here.

Khaki Weed Spray Program

During the week of 13 May 2019 (weather permitting), Council will undertake a one-off spray program for khaki weed within the dog off leash areas in the region.

The dog off leash areas will remain open, as the treatment is targeted directly at the weeds and presents no danger to dogs. However, if you have any concerns, the treatment will no longer be present the week following the spraying program.

Mosquito Spray Program

Council manages a number of known breeding sites that are monitored and treated for mosquito larvae around the City. The program includes treating standing water with larvicide to prevent the emergence of adult mosquitos. Known sites include drains, outlets and pools of water that remain after rain events. For a list of known sites within the Tennyson Ward, visit my website here.
