WELCOME

The State Government budget announced this week, contains some disturbing measures for local residents in our ward.  Namely the sale of State Government owned land for profit.

The following land has been identified for sale by the Newman Government and is on the chopping block:

  • Alan Fletcher Research Station, Sherwood (on the market)
  • Chelmer TAFE (announced for sale)
  • Chelmer Police College (announced for sale)
  • RSPCA site, Fairfield (future unknown)
  • Yeronga TAFE (future unknown)
  • Yeerongpilly TOD (on hold)

I have been actively campaigning to ensure that the valuable green space and character buildings are protected from inappropriate development.  Many of these sites flooded badly and are simply not appropriate for development. I will work with those neighbourhoods affected and fight to ensure developers are not given carte blanche, to radically change the identity and amenity of our gracious character suburbs.

Interestingly, I note that none of the revenue from the forecast land sales will be going to pay down debt, which is actually forecast to increase under the Newman Government from $65bn last year to $73.7bn this year and rising to $81.7bn in 2014-15.

Selling assets to pay recurrent expenditure costs is what got the Bligh Government into trouble so it is sad, frankly stupid, to see the same strategy being continued under the Newman Government.

Regards, Nicole

ALAN FLETCHER RESEARCH STATION
For sale signs have been erected by the Newman Government on the Alan Fetcher Research Station in Magazine Street, Sherwood.

Despite opposing the sale while in opposition, State Member Scott Emerson now supports the sell off.

I am concerned that the State Government marketing materials, has failed to specify the necessary community and parkland requirements and are promoting inappropriate urban development, including 90 units.  Any future development, will have to go through Council's town planning approvals process so it's critical local residents have their say.

Local residents have formed the Alan Fletcher Action Goup to hold developers to account.  For more info visit their Facebook page here or come along to the public meeting on Sunday 16 September 11am on the corner of Ferry and Joseph Streets.

KEN FLETCHER PARK, TENNYSON

The Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk has announced 'Ken Fletcher Park' as the name for the new Tennyson Riverside Park.

The park will be named after the late Ken Fletcher, who was one of Australia's greatest tennis players, winning numerous international titles during the 1960s. Later in his life, Ken helped raise significant money for medical research in Australia.

The names shortlisted for voting were:

  • Hayslope Park
  • Ken Fletcher Park
  • Local Indigenous name
  • Power Station Park
  • Spirit of Brisbane Park
  • Tennyson Riverside Park

The proposed name, 'Ken Fletcher Park' was the most popular, receiving 400 of the 616 votes.

Construction of the new park facilities is currently underway and due for completion in December 2012.

NEW PARK NAME - EARLSDEN PLACE

Local residents gathered to officially name Corinda's newest Park, Earlsdon Place Park earlier this month.

The park was named Earlsdon Place in recognition of it's original owners, The Faulkner Family, who's historic home was located on the site. The Faulkner’s owned the Faulkner Motors Business in Ipswich and worked to raise money for local charities and supported the WW2 war relief activities in our district.

Nicole was delighted to be joined by Mrs Hockings, daughter of the original owners, her family and the local community.

A big thank you goes out to Mrs Curtis, for all her help and assistance in the naming of the Earlsdon Place.

PROJECT: LOVE AND CARE

I recently heard about a wonderful organisation helping children in need. Project Love and Care provides care kits to children when they are first placed in foster care. This volunteer organisation relies on donations.

You can help by providing donations of toiletries for children and teenagers, books or school supplies and good quality second hand clothing, new socks and underwear and a soft toy.

Please assist in keeping this project going to help children in need. Donations can be made on Fridays at 50 Mannington Street, Acacia Ridge. Click here for more information.
