MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi Everyone

Storm and flood related clean-up is now underway around Brisbane. Council is currently picking up kerb-side green waste and expects to have the job completed in about two weeks. Free tipping has now finished but if you need waste vouchers, please contact my office.

Four parks in the ward are closed due to significant tree failures - Sherwood Arboretum, Jacaranda Park and Hyde Road Park Yeronga and Princess Street Park, Fairfield. I encourage you to observe the signs and stay out of these areas while they are made safe. There are still 20 unstable trees to be removed at the Arboretum. Hopefully it will reopen on Sunday.

A range of Council grants opened this week for community, environmental and sporting clubs. Grants range up to $50,000 and the details about how to apply are noted in the story below. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance with your application.

Regards Nicole

Ps help save a Sherwood character house...Sign the petition Saturday 9 February 9 -11am outside Sherwood Woolies.

"I would of course be most happy to provide letters of support for any group or school applying for a grant, so please contact my office," Cr Johnston said.

BACKFLOW VALVES UPDATE

Work has now commenced on the installation of backflow valves in Vivian and Lancelot Streets, Tennyson. These have been brought forward from 2015 as there are some delays with State Government permit approvals.

Vivian Street

The installation commenced on Wednesday, 6 February and is expected to take one day to complete. The works will include:

  • accessing the stormwater outlet via the Tennyson scouts driveway;
  • sliding the backflow device into the stormwater pipe; and
  • securing the device in place.

Lancelot Street

The installation will commence by mid-February and will take three days to complete. The works will include:

  • Minor modification to the concrete headwall surrounding the stormwater outlet; and
  • attaching the backflow device to the stormwater outlet.

I have been pushing through the Budget and City Planning process to ensure all recommended valves are installed as soon as possible. The decision to bring this project forward is a big win for our community.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATES

Over recent months, a number of non-compliant development applications have been submitted in our district. I have been working with residents to oppose these applications as they do not meet City Plan 2000 rules, local planning requirements or the needs and expectations of our community. Here is a brief update on some of the contentious DA’s.

4-8 Skew St Sherwood - 5 Storey Units

Council refused the development application as it did not meet the Sherwood Graceville Neighbourhood Plan or City Plan 2000 - it was outside the medium density area. This was welcomed news and a good decision. Unfortunately the Developer has now appealed the matter to the planning an environment court. A judge will decide if the building goes ahead.

121 Lynne Grove Ave, Corinda - Medical Centre (Dental Surgery)

Council approved the application for a dental surgery on the corner of Lynne Grove Ave and Pratten St, Corinda.  The hours of operation have been restricted and parking conditions implemented. I am very disappointed about this decision as a key aspect of our local plan was to prevent the creep of retail and commercial premises into residential areas. Residents who objected now have the right to appeal to the Planning and Environment Court.

73 Primrose St Sherwood - 5 Storey Units

An application has been lodged for a 5 storey unit complex with rooftop entertaining area (so six storeys really) on the corner of Quarry Rd and Primrose Street, Sherwood. The proposal whilst in the medium density area does not meet the City Plan requirements for a building of this type. What's worse is that the pre-1946 character home can be knocked down as of right. I urge you to help me fight this poor DA as it is too big and will set an adverse precent for Sherwood. You can also sign a petition to save the house on Saturday, 9 February outside Woolworths, Sherwood between 9am and 11 am.

Further details including a draft objection and the petition to save the character house can be found on my website here.

Details of all Council development applications can be found here. If you are concerned about a proposed development in your street please contact my office on 3403 8605 for advice.

KERB-SIDE COLLECTION

This week an annual large household goods collection has started across Tennyson Ward. If your household waste is not flood related please dispose of it via these suburb collections.

  • Rocklea, Fairfield, Tennyson, Yeerongpilly and Yeronga - 11 February 2013
  • Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood, Corinda - 13 May 2013

Items that can be collected include:

  •  furniture and white goods (eg fridges);
  • household appliances (eg stoves);
  • carpet and lino;
  • bath and laundry tubs;
  • wood products; and
  • bicycles.

Please place your household items on the kerb by Sunday night for your week of collection.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS

Congratulations to all the wonderful community and service groups in Tennyson Ward who were recognised with Australia Day service awards. The volunteers who were recognised have worked for many years in our community without fanfare or recognition.

I was delighted to attend the ceremony this year hosted by the Moorooka Lions Club, the Federal Member for Moreton and all elected representatives in our district at the local, state and federal level.

Congratulations to:

  • Jennifer Wrigley, Junction Park State School
  • Harry Horstmann and George Anderson, Stephen’s RSL
  • Roy Machen, Graceville Croquet Club
  • Andrew Spalding, WTSAG

This year Ms Adele Rice, the Principal (retired) of Milperra State High School at Chelmer was honoured with the Sir Jim Killen Service Award for her inspiring services to educating migrant and refugee children. This was most deserved and Adele will be greatly missed in our community.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

In 2012 an estimated 591,400 volunteers cleaned up 16,169 tonnes at 7,363 sites right across Australia.

But we can do better! So be a good sport and join the team to Clean Up Australia on Sunday, 3 March 2013. To get involved click here.

  • Community Clean Up Day: Sunday 3 March
  • Schools Clean Up Day: Friday 1 March
  • Business Clean Up Day: Tuesday 26 February

"Everyone is welcome and it's a great opportunity to help clean up local rubbish hotspots in our community," Cr Johnston said.

BRISBANE SPOTLESS SUBURBS

Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland has for the 5th year opened nominations for Brisbane's Spotless Suburbs for 2013. Last year saw Corinda State High School and Western Districts Netball Association recognised for their efforts.

The aim of the competition is to encourage a cleaner, litter-free community. Judging occurs in seven categories:

  • Community Pride
  • Partnerships
  • Litter Management
  • Resource Management
  • Environmental Protection
  • Young Legends
  • Litter Champion

"I have nominated Yeronga State School this year and would be happy to support any other schools or community groups," Cr Johnston said.

OXLEY SAILING CLUB NEEDS YOUR SANDBAGS!

If you have any sandbags left, please donate them to the Oxley Sailing Club to help with the flood clean-up activities. All sandbags can be left at 142 Leybourne Street, Chelmer.

For more information call John Price on 3379 1320.

BIN DAY APP
Don't miss your bin day again!

What Bin Day is an App for your iPhone and Android devices that helps you remember what bin is being collected from your home this week and when. The App uses a custom built service that just needs your address to determine a bin collection schedule. Adding your home to the App can be done in three easy steps:
  1. Download the app to your iOS or Android phone from the store
  2. add your address by typing it in or let your phone detect your current location
  3. see your bin collections and receive reminders the day before!
FLOOD RECOVERY UPDATE

A big thank you to all those residents who assisted friends, family and neighbours to clean up their homes and local streets after the storm/flood event. I have attached an action shot of the Hughes Family of Yeronga who went out on their own initiative to cut up and remove trees from our local roads. A big thank you for all of your hard work!

If you are still requiring volunteer assistance to help with cleanup at your home please call 1300 427 472 to register.

I have noted below a comparison between flood levels in January 2011 and the recent Australia Day weekend flood for your information.
