Hello
Everyone
Over recent weeks it has become clear to me that the storm season clean-up is not
proceeding as it should across Tennyson Ward. There are trees and debris everywhere, in parks and stacked
along streets and general maintenance of public green spaces is severely lacking.
The volume
of resident’s calls has risen sharply in recent weeks and I thank you for letting me know about
the neighbourhood problems you are observing. Please call 3403 8605 if you notice any repairs or maintenance
works needed in your local area.
It is simply not good enough. I have written to the Lord Mayor
and CEO of Council to express my concerns. I cannot justify the expenditure of money on things like $15m
for artwork in CBD laneways when trees are down on local footpaths and have not been cleaned up for months.
Resources must first be going into proper maintenance of public and green spaces and then the nice to
haves. You can read my letter here. I will keep you
updated about what happens next.
We are all proud of the district we live in and I want to
ensure it remains that way.
Fete season is about to kick off and invite you to join me at the
Sherwood State School Fete on Saturday, 11 May. The Fete is open
to all in the community and has wonderful food (especially jams and cakes) entertainment and stalls. Please
come along to support our wonderful local school.
Regards, Nicole.
Ps... Council
has again changed the date for the resurfacing of the Walter Taylor Bridge. The bridge will not,
be closed this weekend.
CITY HALL OFFICIALLY
REOPENS
I
was delighted to participate in the official reopening of City Hall on Saturday, 6 April. The building
was reopened by her Excellency, Penelope Wensley, Governor of Queensland. The $215m restoration project
is now complete with major structural, functional and heritage improvements to extend the life of City
Hall.
The building looks magnificent and I encourage you to pop along with your family and
visitors to explore this significant part of Brisbane’s heritage.
Here are some things
you might like to do.
-
visit the Museum of Brisbane’s exhibitions on Expo 88 and the Brisbane River;
-
take a public tour to discover the building and its heritage;
-
take a trip up
the clock tower;
-
have afternoon tea at the Shingle Inn;
-
stop in to
the new Red Cross Café for a cuppa and chat now called Commix Espresso;
-
on Tuesdays
from 7 May come along to Council question time at 2pm; and
-
attend a lunchtime or evening
concert in the Auditorium.
I am very proud to have played a small part in helping to
secure the long-term future of City Hall when the project first started (back when I was Councillor Assisting
the Lord Mayor and the Deputy Chairman of Council!).
With
ANZAC Day rapidly approaching on Thursday, 25 April, I hope you will be able to make it to one of
the local services to honour the courage of our service men and women.

OXLEY CREEK EMBANKMENT WORKS
Brisbane City Council has commenced construction
works to stabilise a section of the Oxley Creek embankment, adjacent to the Bert St Clair Oval,Graceville.
The works will repair landslips and associated erosion sustained in the January 2011 floods.
Construction is expected to take approximately six months to complete with standard
working hours between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Works will involve:
-
driving sheet metal piles into the riverbank to create a stable retaining wall; and
-
turfing works on the bank.
For more information please call 1800 669 419 or
3403 8888.
Women
Knitting 4 Women (WK4W) is inviting all women interested in knitting and crochet to come along to Brisbane
Square Library, George Street, Brisbane on Sunday 12 May at 10am to crochet and chat.
Meeting will take place in the large meeting room between the escalators on the ground floor.
WK4W is a craft group who knit or crochet shawls for African women suffering from obstetric fistula,
a tragic outcome of obstructed labour.
The handmade shawls become treasured possessions for
the thousands of women who are treated each year at one of the Hamlin Fistula centres in Ethiopia, founded
by Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin.
Everyone is welcome to join in, including complete beginners.
The shawls are made from simple squares.

CYCLISTS PETITION REMINDER
Just a reminder that the e-petition to install ‘Keep Quiet’ signage for cyclists
around the ward closes on Friday, 19 April.
The aim of the signage
is to encourage and remind early morning cyclists to be more respectful of local residents who may
be sleeping or have small children.
You can sign the e-petition here.
Please pass it onto your friends and neighbours and ask them to register. A hard copy of the petition
is also available in my office to sign.
