 Hi
Everyone,
The Lord Mayor has announced the outcome of the Bus Review and handed the recommendations
to the State Government. I am disappointed that these recommendations were not debated in Council because
the changes affect the whole city. I do not believe that the review meets Council's objectives to provide
local community and public transport options for all in our community. You can read my submission to the
review here.
The following cuts have been recommended by the Lord Mayor. I do not support these cuts.
-
termination of the 101 and 102 bus services to Oxley Station and removal of services
to Corinda residents;
-
frequency reductions to the AM and PM 104 rail replacement services,
which were implemented only two years ago to replace lost rail services;
-
reduction of
the 198 bus service frequency from 25 minutes to 50 minutes; and
-
frequency reductions
to the PM service and removal of the eagle Street bus stop for the P119.
Disappointingly
the review did nothing to improve bus services in Tennyson Ward. I made a number of suggestions of how
that could be done, but these were ignored.
Despite promises by the Lord Mayor that Tennyson
Ward residents would get 'better' bus services when the Sherwood Bus Depot was built, bus services have
been cut and frequencies reduced. About 800 empty buses run along streets in our district none of which
are helping improve local services.
Regards, Nicole
Ps... See you at Christ
the King’s fete on Sunday, 16 June at Graceville for a wonderful day of fun for the whole
family.
The
Lord Mayor spent $1.5m restoring the public pontoon and seawall at the Jindalee Boat Ramp Park but
has refused to do the same at the Taylor Bridge Reserve in Chelmer.
The pontoon, built in the 1980s was damaged in the January 2011 Floods.
Councillor Nicole Johnston said that the Lord Mayor and his 'team' voted against the petition
by local residents and against her motion to restore the pontoon.
“Why the double standard? Why do Jindalee residents have their pontoon rebuilt and erosion
fixed while Chelmer residents are neglected? Why aren’t all wards being treated fairly with respect
to repairing flood damaged community assets?”
“Flood
recovery is still a very real issue for many people in Brisbane and the Lord Mayor and his team should
not be playing politics on this issue.”
For as long
as people have lived in the district, there has been public access to the river under the Walter Taylor
Bridge in Chelmer. It is sad that this year, this access and tradition has been cut off by the Lord
Mayor and his 'team'.

Join me at these upcoming school fetes.

GRACEVILLE ROAD
SAFETY PETITION
Graceville
State School is currently participating in Council's Active School Travel Programme and is also seeking
changes to improve road safety around the school.
There is currently a petition underway to
make further road and pedestrian safety improvements around Graceville State School.
The petition calls on council to urgently install:
-
school zone safety road markings on Richardson Street and Park Road, Graceville;
-
safe crossing points at the intersection of Acacia Avenue, Park Road, Waratah Avenue and Richardson
Street, Graceville; and
-
install safe crossing points at the
intersection of Park Road and Verney Road East, Graceville.
I support the school's
petition and encourage you to sign it. Click here
to sign and support safety around our local schools.
Thank
you to everyone who attended one of my local information sessions on the proposed new City Plan. The new
City Plan contains major changes across Brisbane and in Tennyson Ward and I encourage you to review the
plan and make a submission by 30 July 2012.
Changes include larger/higher
houses and units, smaller block sizes, increased fill and redesignation as a future growth area. It is
clear the Lord Mayor and his team are targeting our suburbs for higher density now and in the future.
If areas are rezoned as medium density all character protections for pre-1946 homes will be automatically
lost. This has already impacted homes in Corinda and Sherwood and other suburbs are at risk.
There are also major changes to building requirements for areas that flood. This includes requirements
for engineering reports and risk assessments to be lodged for any new development application.
Material is available on my website here
and the plan is available on the Council website here.
Submissions can be made online via email or in writing.
I have also started a petition opposing
future growth zones. Click here
to sign the petition.
The nearest Talk to the Planner sessions
are at:
-
City Hall, Sherwood Room, Tuesday 11 June 12noon - 2pm or 4-6pm
-
Ironside State School Hall, St Lucia, Wednesday 3 July 12 noon - 2.30pm or 4.30pm
- 7pm.
In addition to planning and zoning matters,
the City Plan also contains a long-term infrastructure plan known as a Priority Infrastructure Plan or
PIP. Now is the time to speak up about what major infrastructure is needed in Tennyson Ward.
Here are some ideas:
-
clear plans for Oxley Road that deal with
choke points at the Corinda low rail bridge and Walter Taylor Bridge;
-
major drainage improvements
for Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood and Corinda to prevent regular flooding;
-
rehabilitation
of local waterways including Oxley Creek, Moolabin Creek and the Rocky Waterholes to improve the environment
and reduce flooding;
-
a dedicated off-road bikeway along Sherwood Road to connect Sherwood
and Rocklea and suburbs beyond;
-
return of RSPCA and Yeerongpilly DIP as parkland for community
use; and
-
new culvert/bridge for Pratten Street and Cliveden Avenue, Corinda to improve
access for residents.
You can also contact me at the ward
office via telephone 3403 8605 or email tennyson.ward@ecn.net.au and I will be happy to answer your
questions or provide advice about local impacts.
The
Sherwood/Indooroopilly RSL Sub-branch are conducting free computer training for anybody in the community
over 55.
If you are interested in learning more about computers
come along to Sherwood/Indooroopilly RSL, 2 Clewley Street, Corinda. The training takes
place on a Wednesday morning for one hour.

more information call Ken on 3278 6786.
COUNCIL FAILS
ON FLOOD MARKERS
As
part of its independent review of the January 2011 floods, Council produced a Flood Action Plan to improve
our City’s preparedness and response to flood disasters. The Report is available online here.
That Report recommended that flood markers be installed on roads that regularly flood (p18).
Several sites in Tennyson Ward were nominated including Pratten Street and Cliveden Avenue. Despite
publicly stating that these signs had been installed, they have not been.
I
moved a motion in Council calling for installation of these flood markers and warning signage. Sadly it
was voted down by the Lord Mayor and his ‘team’. They didn’t even have the guts to say
why they opposed such a simple but practical flood awareness measure. Last week in Council, more than
$2 million in flood recovery projects were cut from the third quarter Budget review. I spoke strongly
against these cuts.
More than two years on from the floods I am fighting almost every week
in Council to ensure that improved drainage, backflow valves and better flood preparedness is implemented.
I am extremely disappointed by the Lord Mayor’s lack of action on flood recovery and preparedness.
The more time that passes since the January 2011 floods the easy it is to forget how devastating
the floods were. I will not forget and I will keep fighting for practical on ground improvements
that will help boost our communities flood resilience and mitigation measures.
