Hi
Everyone,
Development issues are running hot at the moment through
Corinda and Sherwood with a number of non-compliant five storey or higher buildings being proposed.
I fought side by side with the community to stop medium density
buildings in our residential areas and have tried again as part of the revised City Plan. Jamming more
people into beautiful character suburbs that are already struggling with congested roads, a lack of stormwater
or sewerage upgrades, public transport cuts, flooding and growing student numbers at local schools is
not smart planning.
Proposals like 73 Primrose Street,
Sherwood should not be allowed because they are outside the planning rules for a building of this kind.
Other major developments in the area are:
-
39 Ferry Street, Sherwood (townhouses);
-
27 Magazine
Street, Sherwood (Alan Fletcher Research Station land sub-division);
-
508 Oxley Road, Sherwood (five storeys);
-
4-8 Skew
Sreet, Sherwood (five storeys cnr of Oxley and Sherwood Roads);
-
640 Oxley Road, Corinda (five storeys); and
-
699
Oxley Road, Corinda (five storeys).
My website here
has a list of all local developments and link to the Council website planning page where you can view
the plans. My office also helps residents to review developments and makes submissions where they
do not comply with Council’s town planning laws.
The Walter
Taylor South Action Group's website here is also a
very useful community resource about local developments and plans in the area.
You do have the right to have a say about what building happens in your neighbourhood. Watch
out for the black and white notification sign that is erected on development sites.
Regards, Nicole.
Ps Save the date...Join me at the Graceville
State School Fete for heaps of fun, food, activities and rides on Saturday, 31 August.
 The
Oxley Men's Shed is now officially open to the community.
The Shed will include social as well as practical woodwork and other handicraft activities.
Meetings are held every Monday (work day) and
Tuesday (get together day) at 9am, 18 California Road, Oxley. All are welcome.
3379 6069 for more information.
 Lord
Mayor, Graham Quirk, and the Newman Government have reneged on their promise to convert the old RSPCA
site at Fairfield to parkland for community recreational and sporting use.
In August
2011 Council said it was a “terrific idea” and voted unanimously to support the
proposal. They have back flipped and the State Government may now sell the site to developers.
This land belongs to our community and should not be sold off for profit to the highest bidder.
I am calling on the Lord Mayor and Premier to work together in the best interests of the community
to convert the old RSPCA site to parkland.
You can help by signing the epetition here
or in person at my office in Fairfield Gardens.
For more information visit my website here.

GRACEVILLE SS
WINS GOLDEN BOOT
Congratulations
to Graceville State School who won the Golden Boot award for the School with the highest number of children
riding to school last month.
Graceville State School and Mary Immaculate Primary School are
currently participating in Council's Active School Travel Programme for 2013. The weekly Walking, Wheeling
Wednesday activity day encourages children to walk, ride, car pool or use public transport instead of
arriving by car.
Councillor Nicole Johnston and the Sherwood Services
Club, together with parent and teacher volunteers recently hosted a hearty breakfast for the students.
Congratulations Graceville State School on your wonderful win!
 A
development application has been lodged for 641 Fairfield Road, Yeerongpilly (the site facing Ortive Street)
on the Yeerongpilly TOD site.
Development of the site has been on hold since the January
2011 floods but the Newman State Government has done a secret deal to allow Montrose Access to build a
residential care facility for disabled children on the site. Montrose recently sold their premises
at Corinda.
Under the Yeerongpilly TOD masterplan, the State Government had previously earmarked
the site for low to medium density residential development.
“I am appalled that the
State Government has tried to slip development of the TOD site past the community with no notice about
its intentions. The State Government needs to immediately come clean about its intentions for the Yeerongpilly
TOD and explain why it is hiving off chunks of the site without an approved masterplan.”
Councillor Johnston said, while Montrose Access were a wonderful not-for-profit organisation helping disabled
children, there were significant issues with the proposed building on the site including flooding, filling
and a lack of onsite parking.
Details about the proposed impact assessable DA can be found
here. Further information about the DA process is available from my office on 3403
8605 or tennyson.ward@ecn.net.au.
BCC Fox Management Programme
Brisbane City
Council (BCC) has started a Fox Management Programme around Corinda State High School
in August 2013.
BCC warning signs will be placed
in the vicinity of trap sites to identify risks to the community.
Any property owners affected will be advised of the programme.
A similar programme has been underway in Strickland Terrace Park, Sherwood.
For more information please contact Emma Rigney on 3403 8888.
QUU Smoke Testing
Queensland Urban Utilities
(QUU) has commenced smoke testing to identify stormwater connections that may be damaged or illegally
connected to the sewerage system in the Graceville area.
Disruptions to your home will be minimal and it is not necessary for you to be home during the inspection,
although authorised officers may need to access external areas of your property, including your backyard.
If you have security or a dog you may need to provide the officers with this access.
Testing will be performed until Friday, 16 August.
For more information call QUU on 13 26 57.
YERONGA MOVIES IN THE PARK

s Suburban Initiative Fund and the Councillor for Tennyson Ward.

SHERWOOD BUSINESS AWARDS MICHAEL BOGGAN SCHOLARSHIP
Thank
you to local Sherwood recruitment and training business, T3 Australia for their generosity in
awarding Michael Boggan a $10,000 scholarship.
This is good
news for the Ipswich teen and his family after his hand was severely damaged in a homemade bomb
back in May this year.
Michael plans to use the scholarship
to assist with his dream to become a builder and to speak at schools to raise awareness about bullying.
