At a recent gardening day at Mitchelton Pre-schooling Centre, ‘Operation Compost’
was launched. The children were able to load their lunch scraps into the compost bins and have
a go at tumbling them. The children will use the resulting compost to fertilise MPC’s many
garden beds. Sustainability is a core tenet of the centre’s philosophy and one of the aims
is to foster sustainable practices. Mitchelton Pre-schooling Centre is taking enrolments for 2014, for

The
Newmarket Pool is set to undergo major improvements over the next three years thanks
to a long-term partnership between the lessee and Brisbane City Council. The pool is currently undergoing
more than $2 million of works to include a new indoor heated pool and upgraded children’s play facilities.
Councillor
Andrew Wines said the upgrade would be completed this year and included a new dry land pirate ship, waterslide,
and children’s water play area. He said he expected the new indoor heated pool and gymnasium to
be completed by October 2014, subject to approval. “This upgrade will make the Newmarket Pool among
the best pool facilities in South East Queensland,” he said. “It will be the leading venue
for a summer family day out.”
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the new pool would cater for aqua
aerobics, water walking, learn to swim programs, and general recreational use. “Once complete, these
improvements will give more people access to the facility for sport and recreation as part of their active
and healthy lifestyles,” he said. Cr Quirk said the Newmarket Swimming Pool was the second busiest
of 20 Brisbane City Council pools with over 160,000 patrons through its doors in the 2011/12 financial
year. The Newmarket facility is just one part of Council’s plan to improve on pool infrastructure
with new pools planned for construction at Bracken Ridge and Parkinson.
Blackwood St Toilets
Councillor Andrew Wines secured funds through the 2013/14 budget to construct a toilet block on land leased
by Queensland Rail inside the car park area of Mitchelton Railway Station.
Cr Wines said it was
a big win for the community and thanked Premier Campbell Newman and State Member for Everton Tim Mander
for facilitating the leased area. “People have been lobbying me to have a toilet built here for
years and it is great that we are finally at a point where construction will occur in the near future,”
he said.
Mitchelton business owners welcomed the move. President of the Blackwood Street Chamber
of Commerce Jane Dunk said it was “fantastic” news. She said it would be of great benefit
to shoppers. “Most chamber members are business owners in the street and they always have people
coming to them wanting to use toilets. It will be great for market day,” she said. The toilets will
be operational this financial year.

Brisbane
City Council has allocated funding in the 2013/14 budget to upgrade
Bob Cassimaty Park
at the Ferny Grove Picnic Grounds.
Councillor Andrew Wines said a significant amount of money would
be spent to replace existing play equipment and build a new high quality park of a similar style and scope
to Sedgley Park, Newmarket.
“The new playground will be expanded and will include equipment
for all ages and abilities with shade covering,” he said. “The park will be a centrepiece
for Ferny Grove and something the community will be proud of.”
If you have any ideas or preferences
on the equipment you would like to see please contact the Enoggera Ward office on 3407 2510 or email

Oxford
Park Recreation Reserve on Blaker Rd is set to receive a major refurbishment and upgrade as part
of Brisbane City Council’s 2013/14 budget.
Councillor Wines said fields will be remediated.
This will include clay capping and resurfacing with the construction of two new cricket pitches to replace
the existing, ruined pitches. He said two new playgrounds would also be built as well as shelter facilities
for St Williams Primary School families.
“There is a plan to build a pathway connecting Blaker
Rd to Rolleston St and further plans to install safety lighting. This is also big news for local sporting
groups because the funding provided for remediation works will see the reserve transformed into a district
level park,” he said.
The north-west sporting community has welcomed Cr Wines’ commitment
to refurbish the park.
President of the Ferny Districts Cricket Club Gary Somerville said the news
could not have come at a better time. “This is great news because we have more cricketers than grounds
on the northside,” he said. To have Oxford Park usable again will be fantastic. “We will use
the cricket pitches every Saturday.”
The upgrade will commence in August and is expected to
be completed by Christmas, weather permitting.

Councillor
Wines has secured funding in the 2013/14 budget to provide traffic management strategies for north-west
streets. Council intends to improve the intersection of Archdale and McGinn Rd, Ferny Grove increasing
motorist and pedestrian safety and smoothing traffic flow to make it easier for motorists to navigate
the intersection. However designs are yet to be finalised.
There is also funding for design and consultation
works for Madsen St, Keperra. Council will investigate residents’ concern and demand for traffic
calming and from that will determine the most effective scheme.
The projects will occur this financial
year.
