LPC Seminar - global mortality trends

This presentation will review data from the World Health Organization Mortality Data Bank highlighting the overall trends of suicide around the world. The data shows that these trends have been decreasing in the last 10 years after a period in which they increased globally. The downward trend is observed for both males and females of all ages, with the exception of young age groups. A possible relationship between these changes and national strategies and initiatives for suicide prevention will be explored.

Getting to Griffith University, Mt Gravatt campus

Directions heading south from Gateway Arterial

Heading south along the Gateway take the Mt Gravatt-Capalaba exit and follow that up to the first lights and turn right in to Broadwater Rd.
Follow Broadwater to the very end and turn right in to Logan Rd.
Follow Logan Rd for a few kms and turn left in to Nursery Rd.
Follow Nursery Rd to the end (past the roundabout) and turn left at George Hartnett Funerals and a quick left again into Messines Ridge Rd.
Follow this and you will enter the university grounds - attached maps and directions will lead you in from here.

Directions heading south from South East Freeway

Mt Gravatt campus, Griffith University, is at the very end of Messines Ridge Road. It used to be the Mt Gravatt Teachers College and is located on the opposite side of the freeway from Griffith University’s Nathan campus.

Heading south along the South East Freeway, take the Marshall Rd exit, but stay in the right hand lane going straight ahead. This is Cannes St, which merges in to Bapaume Rd, and follow all the way along until you come to the roundabout at the very end of the road. Turn right at the roundabout and then left at the lights, then the very next left which is Messines Ridge Rd.

An alternative route would be following Cavendish Rd and turning right into Nursery Rd then following that all the way until the end. This will also bring you to Gaza Rd at the end of which, turn left and left again.

Directions heading north from South East Freeway

Take the Tarragindi, Gaza Rd exit and the very first right at the lights. Take the next right after the bridge and the first left after the George Hartnett Complex. This is Messines Ridge Rd and the University is located at the end of this road.

Refer to the Campus Map for building and parking locations.

Do you need to know more about suicide research and prevention?

Griffith University’s Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) is the first tertiary institution in the world to develop, and the only university in Australia, to award Postgraduate Degree qualifications in Suicide Prevention and Suicidology.

These programs are designed to equip suicide prevention workers from a variety of backgrounds with specialist knowledge to deal with suicidal behaviour in an academic, policy or practical context within the fields of health, education, law enforcement, emergency, clergy, social and community service sectors. The Graduate Certificate in Suicide Prevention Studies and the Master of Suicidology programs are available online.

AISRAP is also now funded by the Department of Health and Ageing as a National Centre of Excellence in Suicide Prevention on the Mt Gravatt campus, Griffith University, under the leadership of Professor Diego De Leo. The Centre plays a key role in the Australian Government’s  National Suicide Prevention Strategy by providing advice, guidance and evaluation on initiatives and programs in suicide prevention. AISRAP is one of three centres internationally, designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in  Suicide Prevention.
