Postgraduate
Business Scholarships recipients
Congratulations to the successful recipients
of the Postgraduate Business Scholarships for semester 1 and semester 2 2010. Master of Asian Studies
student, Dan Quirante, one of the scholarship recipients explains how it has assisted him with his studies.
"Receiving the scholarship has provided me with the
peace of mind and security to manage my tuition, rent, utilities, transportation and book expenses. Through
the Griffith Business School Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship funds, I was able to provide financial
assistance to my mother, who had recently migrated to Australia. In addition, I now have the time and
resources needed to focus on my studies and family commitments, and take up a full load of classes and
activities, while simultaneously preparing for graduate employment. My family and friends’ experiences
continue to motivate me to persevere and to use my education to better the conditions of my loved ones,
many of whom are from within immigrant communities."
The scholarship was introduced
this year and is for commencing students. If you know of someone thinking of commencing postgraduate studies
in business at Griffith University, send them to the to the scholarships
web page for more information. Also, Griffith Business School are introducing Masters with Honours
scholarships in 2011 for students who want to continue their postgraduate studies and complete their Honours.
Information will be made available on the scholarships web page soon.

Global Insights Series Lunch: Managing risk in a risky business
Thursday
16th September 2010
Ann Sherry AO, CEO of Carnival Australia, the nation’s leading holiday
cruise operator, provided guests with a unique insight into the world of cruise ship operations, and the
diverse and anomalous risks faced in an industry so dependent on a wide range of factors over which they
have little or no control.
At any one time Carnival Australia has 16,000 people at sea, on
ships weighing between 70 and 100,000 tonnes. They are looking after the Occupational health and safety
of 30 different nationalities for whom the ship is both workplace and home for extended periods of time.
Ann articulated the unique challenges faced by operating in an organisation where corporate reputation
can become a direct factor of the behaviour of its customers, and spoke frankly about some of the situations
which had been damaging to this reputation. Further, the issues faced when operating in the South Pacific,
covering great distances, subject to the vagaries of weather and the communities of the Pacific Islands,
made this an interesting and somewhat confronting luncheon.

and opinions, please visit griffith.edu.au/podcasts
FISH!
Co-creating a workplace where people want to live.
Friday 17th September 2010
The Big Tuna, a.k.a. Dr Steve
Lundin addressed the assembled guests at the final Griffith Business School Alumni Network breakfast of
2010. In the beautiful setting of the Sheraton Mirage, Gold Coast, Steve discussed the development and
progress of the philosophy of FISH! and the power of attitude in the enjoyment of life.
Steve's
address was forthright, energetic and at times moving, taking those present on a journey through choices
and a life too precious to be passing through. Steve considered the traditional concepts of work-life
balance to be a deceiving framework in which to live, as he says 'in reality it's all life ... we spend
more time at work that anywhere else, ... therefore work is part of life not separate from it', there
is a choice and we can fill our workplaces with life even when we are doing a job which we don't necessarily
want to be doing, as long as you are spending huge portions of your life at work, why not make it count.
4 key messages were left for attendees to consider and implement at will:
* Be there
(be wholly present in all that you do)
* Play (make things fun, even the worst jobs can have playful
parts)
* Make their day (enthuse the people around you, make them feel special)
* Choose your
attitude (make it a conscious choice, good or bad)
So the thrust of the message is 'take
your work seriously, but not yourself seriously at work'.
Did you miss out on seeing Steve
at this Breakfast? there will be another chance to catch him on April 28, 2011, when Steve will be addressing
our Global Insights Series Lunch on the topic of CATS - the nine lives of innovation.
